Sorry, the show is just terrible.

I remember The State in the early 90's and used to watch it on MTV. I remember finding a few of the sketches mildly amusing, but for the most part I didn't get it.

I started watching this on Netflix the other night to see if it was really as great as some people have said (one of my friends thinks it's the funniest show ever). I got through about 15 minutes of the first episode without cracking a smile once. Now I'm not comparing this against any other sketch shows, or arguing whether or not those particular shows are worth watching. I understood the 90's references, and I understood the 'jokes' if you can even call them that.

What I realized is The State was idiotic, juvenile, unoriginal, crap. It embodies all the stupid parts of the early 90's. This was a sketch show for those older teen/young 20's who just discovered grunge and coffee houses. This show was that awkward stage of the 90's, that stage where people didn't understand that balloon pants and yellow neon hats weren't cool. That stage in between where 80's rock had died off, but gangsta rap hadn't hit the main stream yet.

It's the failed couple of years in the 90's, where everyone was trying to find the next thing to identify with, but all we really had was catchy bands like The Spin Doctors. That period of time where nothing had an edge. It was the most forgettable period of time in the last 30 years.

That's The State. It's only memorable, because it existed in some of the emptiest few years known to man.

You would have to watch more than fifteen minutes of the entire series to make such a huge call.

I got through the first 15 minutes of Schindler's List without breaking down and sobbing even once. It is therefore not a sad film. It has no emotional depth. I gave up after 15 minutes but that seemed like plenty of time to make such a broad and sweeping judgment.

I can appreciate the fact that it may not have appealed to your sense of humor, but can you appreciate that your review of it is a bit pretentious. You are taking shots at a lot of things and sort of throwing the state in there too. If you hated the early 90's that is totally cool, but your opinion is far from fact and really is not based in a lot of peoples reality. I bet if you looked deep in side your self you could admit that something you enjoy is not the "coolest" or "hippest" thing ever conceived! Take that joy you have, and maybe try to understand why some body might enjoy The State.

you seem to hate the time period more than the show. seriously, you mention the 90s in every paragraph & dedicate two specifically to it. you sound like a complete tool.

"The State was idiotic, juvenile"

nope. you just have no concept of irony or satire.

I know it's almost 2 years later but I'd like to add that gangsta rap was in full swing when the State premiered. We already had Dr. Dre, Snoop Dog, Ice Cube, and Warren G with big hits already. Kind of off topic but it needed to be said.
Also I hate thousand island dressing. I've spent hours and hours looking for a website about salad dressings to I can go on there and write 5 - 6 paragraphs about how much I hate thousand island dressing but I can't find a website about salad dressings. Any ideas?

Maybe you didn't live through the 90s but a lot of people knew Hammer pants weren't cool from the getgo and didn't wear them.

Just like there are fads right now. How do you think orange skin and fat assess will look in 30 years?
