A movie that should be remade

You've got to admit that this film took an incredibly fun premise and wasted it.

I really think a remake would be a fun idea. Taking the same story: six alumni arriving at their former high school for a reunion only to find out that it's only them there, and they are then picked off one-by-one by some form of Satan, killing them for their sins. With a good director, a talented cast, a good writer, and some chilling music, this could be not only a good remake, but a very well done horror film.

Gays and Lesbians would tear it apart. If they use the "Homosexuallity is a Sin" motive again. Because The Redeemer kills a lesbian for being a lesbian.

reply

I don't think it's problematic if the redeemer kills gays and Lesbians because of their sexuality, so long as the redeemer himself is cast as a villain. Just because someone is raped or murdered in a movie doesn't mean that the movie itself justifies rape or murder.

I so agree with you.. me and some friends are trying to get finance to remake this and Mountain Top Motel Massacre..damn ..even the originals would make a great double feature.

I disagree. NO films should be remade. 99% of all remakes suck, for a few simple reasons...

1. The very mindset of those who make them is that the original and all the people who made it were less than adequate at their job.

2. Whenever ANYONE remakes a movie they usually try and "Update it and lend their own vision", in other words they usually change the story and many of the main elements so much that they strip everything from it that made the original special.

3. They just do it to use the title and name recognition it generates with the unsuspecting public. In other words, they don't give a $hit about the original, but want to use the name to make a quick buck.

4. The original gets lost. For instance when some new viewer says "THE THING" or "DAWN OF THE DEAD" are their favorite horror films, they usually don't even realize it is a remake. The fact that there is a Howard Hawks and a George Romero is completely lost on them.

5. Lack of respect for the audience that loved the original.

There are also countless other reasons to NEVER do a remake.

Why is it that people are so remake happy? Simple, because they are incapable of original thought and being creative, which should be a PREREQUISITE and a MUST for being a film maker unless you want to be a complete hack.

Whatever happened to letting any worthwhile original movie stand as it is? That story has already been told, that movie has already been made... Do something original with the new film stock dammit!

I truly can't decide which is worse, the remake or the person that pays to see it. The person that pays to see it is just an enabler. If people boycotted remakes and put a dent in the box-office, it would be a financially unsound idea for anyone to say "Hey! Let's make a quick buck off doing a remake!". Only the most unoriginal of thinkers looks at a film and instead of being inspired by it to make something new, instead thinks "That movie needs to be remade".

Agreed! Although I love Carpenter's The Thing

Excellent post, sidterror! It's good to see other people pointing this out.

I disagree! The movie is perfect for chessy weirdness' sake!

If they would remake it today, given the high school reunion plot, they would do a horrible mess with stupid characters, stupid dialogue and a PG-13 rating (that seems to be the 'in' thing in hollywood right now.)

Does anyone know who owns the remake/sequel rights or is it in public domain? I think the long defunct Dimension Pictures owned the theatrical rights and Continental and VCI owned video rights. It seems to have fallen by the wayside for years, even though I heard rumblings of Code Red attempting to put it on DVD, but with no luck due to there being seemingly to no good print in existance, which is a bit hard to believe.

I think this could make a good remake. Even the screenwriter of the film in an interview said that it would be a good idea if the prolouge and epilouge were cut. I couldn't agree more.

I think I like the title The Redeemer more than Class Reunion Massacre. They should probably go with Redeemer if they were going to make a serious remake.

Nonsense. This is one of the creepiest horror films of the 70's. A remake? Now, that would be a waste.

no *beep* remake

When there's no more room in hell, The dead will walk the earth...

This film doesn't need a remake; it's fine the way it is.

1,000 mini-bios and I feel like I'm just getting started

I actually have to agree. I've always thought that a remake of this film is quite necessary and could be amazing if done right. I swear that, if I ever get to direct films that aren't just little student films, this is pretty much the number one film I'd want to make (though I have a number of original ideas too). But seriously, someone needs to get on this.
