Sorry, but I am so confused about the 2 thumb thing: the killer/preacher guy's double thumbs disappear at the end and the little kid gets the 2nd thumb and goes back to the river from whence he came. So it got passed on to the kid?
Was there supposed a Redeemer 2:Electric Boogaloo?
Also, who was inside the puppet during the auditorium scene?

The kid Christopher was the Redeemer, son of Satan or maybe Satan himself, that came from Hell. You see the boy earlier walk out of the desert lake, then at the end he returns.
The kid basically possessed and used the preacher to kill. And after it was finished the preacher was released, and the extra thumb disappeared.
And the puppet thing, well most likely the Redeemer using his magic tricks.

I just watched this film and had the exact same questions.
If the whole Satanic possession bit is the general consensus, then why does the priest seem to be calm around the "Christopher" character. It almost seemed like he liked him. I would assume a man of the Lord would be revolted and frightened by the demon trying to possess his body.
Concerning the puppets used during the murders, I thought he may have been manipulating them like a ventriloquist... but I might be looking into this way too deeply.
The Redeemer just gave the preacher the ability to do what he really wanted to do any way.
Possession or not, he was happy to have cleansed those sinners.
