RIP: Producer David Rose dies at 92

David Rose (1924-2017),

Sadly, David Rose has passed away at the age of 92.

The producer of Z Cars and Softly Softly David Rose joined the BBC after wartime service in the RAF and as an actor in weekly rep. He found his niche in the Documentary-drama department before being headhunted as the head of regional drama productions at Pebble Mill. 'Second City Firsts', 'Boys from the Blackstuff', 'Gangsters' and many others were under his supervision.

Needing a change after a decade, he joined Channel 4 as it was gearing up to launch as commissioning editor for fiction. The 'Film on Four' series of movie-like productions came from his stable. His time at the channel ended with his retirement from the industry.

Awarded a Bafta fellowship in 2010 (as well as several other honours in his career), David Rose was one of the true creative geniuses of television. Many writers and directors began their careers under his guidance, his retirement was the end of an era in drama.

David was one of the most enthusiastic contributors to my series of Z Cars books, though he was rather modest about his work on the series. The books would have been far poorer without his invaluable assistance. The majority of the TeleSnaps for the series came from his own collection.

I shall miss him dearly. A dear dear man.
