Where does the Royle family live?

Just seen my first episode, and I love it, especially because I'm an American studying here and dating a man from Mansfield and I can see similarities with his family, which I think is great. Barbara seems like she could be one of the ladies that works in the Student Union shop with me, same inflection, everything (this is in Nottingham.)

So I'm just wondering if anyone knows if they are supposed to be from a certain place in England, or are they just generally supposed to be 'common'?

They live in Wythenshawe, an estate very close to Manchester Aiport in the North West of England.

I always thought they lived in Stockport (a large town just south of Manchester).
They talk about areas in Stockport and cheer on (Stockport) 'County' in one episode. Plus Mrs Merton - Caroline Aherne's other character - is from Heaton Norris in Stockport. Craig Cash is also from Heaton Norris.

You might be right about Wythenshawe but the above just made me think Stockport.

They live in Wythenshawe... no doubt about it, they talk about the market and how Nana and Barbara used to walk up to ringway road and watch the planes land at the airport... something i used to do as a kid! I'm living in canada at the moment, everytime i get homesick i just pop the royle family into the dvd player and feel like i'm home again. :)

Only thing is, I used to live near "Ringway Road" and its a small cul de sac, its not where you can see any planes. They perhaps meant Portway, which is the road leading through Wythenshawe to the airport.

However, they talk about "the precinct" and not "civic centre" etc. So I think its a mix of everywhere really, but mainly Wythenshawe, as Caroline Ahern grew up in Benchill.

Wythenshawe without doubt (some more 'evidence')...

They also mention that Emma (Anthony's bird) is posh and from Timperley,just down the road.

The reference to Stockport County may be not to offend the 'big' club supporters around the North West...and Dave may well originate from that area.

They also mention the bad beer in the Pear Tree which is Brooklands way (once part of Wythenshawe).

Probably a few more hints also...

Caroline Ahearne is actually a shock horror gasp. a Londoner, she was born in Chiswick.

Definately Manchester,although Jim and twiggy make no attempt to disguise the scouse accents.
