I found Lynn's "Back to the BBC" song and dance thing in the last ep of series 1 unintentionally creepy. It just comes out of nowhere like she was possessed!

shareAlan isn't exactly politically correct - but he seems to hate genuine racism, especially when someone he sees as "beneath him" (like Michael) says something racist.
In the case of the hotel guest I think he just wanted any excuse to get rid of him. I haven't been to Acton so I don't know if it's full of blacks or not.
Mike Sampson said there were a "few too many" not that Clacton was "full of blacks".
Alan is very racist but only in your modern day way. It is one area where he is quite atuned to what is socially acceptable or not.
