Simpson the incompetent bully

They changed quite a bit from the books to the TV series, and in almost all of these cases the change involved going away from something which made sense in the books, to something which didn't make sense at all in the series.

For example:

Simpson wished to bully Hornblower by having Archie wake him every 30 minutes at night (when Archie has a seizure, Clayton takes over the task of waking him up). What this means is that Clayton is the one who has to be careful to be awake every 30 minutes -- and so must Simpson, in order to monitor the punishment. Hornblower is the only one among them who does not have to mind the time, as he is being awoken anyway, and would not be the one punished if he missed a wake-up call. So here, Simpson is punishing Clayton and himself(!) more than Hornblower.
