So Polite

I always get a laugh at how polite enemies were in this series.
Some examples that come to mind:
Hornblower getting cranky at the other captain for taking a side of beef "I know my duty, Sir!"
The captin mentioned above and the other captain (sorry am too lazy to search for names) after the Fire Boat scene where they are yelling at each other but still calling each other 'Sir!'
The Spanish Don who Hornblower was a prisioner of:
"It is my duty to try to escape at all other times, Sir"
After the failed escape the Don saying "I am..... Disapointed"
Hornblower reminds him he is allowed to escape outside of walking with the actress.
Then to top it off, Hornblower escapes and see it as his duty to return! Captain Pelgeew says some word like 'Puntilious' regarding him wanting to return.
In the movie with the sadistic French marquis, Hornblower goes to the front to see 'My Lord' and as he arrives stops running to walk like a gentleman while gun shots are firing all around him.
The Spanish captain on the Indy explaing via a letter that Hornblower is reading that war has been declared and they have 8 hours to get away. The letter reads with long introduction "His most catholic majesty, render of the Gloden Fleece, etc etc till Pelgrew says "Yes, yes. Get to the point" Then Pelgrew tells Hornblower to tell him to GTFO and Hornblower, replies with a diplomatic answer and the enemy bows his head in gratification.

reply

FYI, the name is Pellew not Pelgrew.

Even when they were brutally killing each other.

reply

One of the things I like about this series is the urbanity of the characters.
