My dad made me tape it for him tonight on p.b.s.

He was all fired up and bugging the hell out of me to make sure I taped it for him because he couldn't get it where he was. I couldn't imagine anything getting me that fired up to have somebody tape something for me. I'm trying to think of what that would be, but I haven't figured it out yet. If I do, I'll let you know. Now I decided to get him the CD of the soundtrack too. I'm such a good son.

it's funny you said that. my mom just told me about this tonight. i grew up with the leslie ann warren version (1970's). i never knew the same directors did the same story in 1957. the movie/music is the same and everything. i grew up with this stuff. why did it take me 26 years to know about this?! it was very good for its time! it's too bad that one of the directors has passed away this year. what happened to the good old classics?! sorry...justin and kelly from american idol wont do the trick! their movie was awful.

I taped it for myself last night, once I found out it was on. I asked my dad if he knew anything about it, but he didn't.. What's sad is that he was 2 when this came on, and I know more about it, and I wasn't even born back then.

This was so exciting--I just watched my tape of it again last night. My mom grew up on the Leslie Ann Warren one and is always singing the songs, but we felt this first one was definitely the best. Has anyone ever seen a better step sister than Kaye Ballard??

I got the DVD for Christmas, and am watching it now. :D You can't ask for a better cast. Of course, I don't like it when they do remakes either.

Now all you have to do is tape the version of Peter Pan that was done around the same time with Mary Martin and Cyril Richard. Another classic lost in the sauce.

I ADORED Peter Pan as a child, wish they would release that on DVD. For now, I listen to the soundtrack often..."Lovlier thoughts, Michael!!" :-D

If you google it, there are a few different places where you can get a copy of that version of Peter Pan on dvd.

You are, indeed, a good son, donsmith-1.

I was 5 when this was on TV, but I remembered watching it with my mother, who I lost 7 years later. It's one of the best memories of my childhood. I was absolutely thrilled to see it again, when I was in my 40s, at the Museum of TV and Radio in New York. When it got released on video and was shown on PBS, of course I watched it again.

I was in a production of the stage version in High School, as well.

This version of Cinderella is the best. There's an intelligent script, and delightful performances.
Furthermore, it's the only film work we have for some of these people, such as Howard Lindsay.
You can see Dorothy Stickney at the Museum of TV and Radio in Sondheim's Evening Primrose, but
others never made movies. Kaye Ballard and Alice Ghostley are such fun as the stepsisters, and Edie Adams displays the musical talent that Broadway knew from Wonderful Town and Li'l Abner.

I teach a unit on the history of Cinderella to my Third Graders and show this, along with the Fairie Tale Theatre and the PBS short version of Ashpet every year. They love it, even if it is in black and white.

Let us honor the goddesses and gods for finding the kinescope and releasing this classic for us.
