Ilka Chase

I remember watching the original broadcast in 1957. Of course it was in black & white in our home because this was before our first color set. I remember Ilka Chase because she was a panelist on the TV quiz show, Masquerade Party, but I always thought she played the fairy godmother. I remember she wore a sequin glued to each eyelid which gave her a very exotic look. I was only 10 and haven't seen it since, but if anybody could verify Ms. Chase really played the stepmother, as this site says, I would be grateful.

Yes, I just watched it last night, and Ilka Chase played the stepmother. Edie Adams, who did have a sequin on each eyelid (good memory!) played the fairy godmother.

I've been told that when the cast went into the recording studio to cut the album before the telecast, Ilka Chase was unavailable and an uncredited "ghost" singer actually is heard on the album.

Strangely enough, the same thing happened with the 1965 tv remake (with lesley ann warren). Jo Van Fleet, who played the Stepmother this time, was also unavailable when the Cast Album was recorded. So, once again, an uncredited singer was used.

The sequin on the eyelid still looks magical and exotic today. I suppose now that they have glitter eye shadow, no one needs to use Ilka's make-up technique anymore.

Life is never fair, and perhaps it is a good thing for most of us that it is not.

i've never seen the movie.
