This film doesn't stand up well over time but I still think it is hilarious. There are some parts that just strain belief but overall, the pace is fast enough that you don't think about it too much.
My absolutely favorite part of the movie was the scene where they first arrive in NYC and Steve Martin instructs Goldie Hawn how to walk like a New Yorker. The idea is that they won't be immediately identified as Rubes from the sticks (Ohio). Then immediately, they are scammed and mugged!
There are two things that make me laugh hysterically about that scene. One is that Goldie Hawn still believes that she has just been mugged by Andrew Lloyd Weber, even as the guy runs off with her purse. The second is that within an hour of arriving in Paris, a guy tried to scam me and my traveling companion the same way, however without the gun!
My traveling companion was older than me and threw an absolute hissy fit that I wouldn't give the guy money - what kind of heartless beeyatch was I, anyway - and she could not believe that I would leave a fellow standing in the street when obviously, he was in financial distress and only I could help him. She really worked herself into a frenzy shouting at me for being heartless. Goldie Hawn was more charming. But now that I see this scene in the movie, I can't help but burst into laughter - Rubes, indeed!
