So where'd the Iron Giant even originate from

Part of the mystery. Even the book doesn't say. In the "deluxe edition" DVD there's an unused bit about the Giant's "dream" of a planet where other similar robots are battling. The planet apparently explodes and the Giant is seen hurtling through space but that's all we see.
