How was this overlooked?


Even if this film wasn't the typical box-office smash (because it actually packed emotion, was hand-drawn and had a powerful message).... how did the Academy overlook this story. It always bothered me that Brad Bird won for 'The Incredibles' and not this.. when many people haven't even seen the film that really solidified him as a great filmmaker. Just wondering.

I overlooked it for 17 years. Just watched it lol but yea much better than I was expecting I'm surprised it performed poorly

There wasn't a category for animated feature if I remember correctly. It came later

Quality has never been a guarantee of popularity (in fact...). The official story is that this film got lost in a corporate shuffle, was poorly promoted and didn't find its audience until years later. There was a rumo(u)r that the studio caved into pressure from the gun lobby but those were saner times and no one has ever substantiated that.
