Young Man SPOILERS

I posted this a long time ago, and thought I would re-post it since the older one got deleted. If you've seen the movie just once, and wanna watch it again, and didn't expect what was going to happen at the end, here's some clues you should look for when watching it again

1. David constantly snaps at Alexis to watch the road, and honks his horn, like he's signalling for the Young Man to pretend to fall and be hurt

2. While on the ferry, David goes to get a cup of coffee, and the Young Man walks into the coffee area at the exact same time David exits

3. The surprise picnic and going on the boat, and ending up on the island, where the Young Man happened to be. When David walks off into the fog, the Young Man comes out

4. David quickly moves away from the Young Man, after patching him up, when Alexis brings more firewood

5. David is the one who brings the Young Man a blanket during the night

6. Young Man knows exactly what David likes in his coffee, but has to ask Alexis what she likes

7. David quickly moves away from Young Man in the kitchen, when Alexis comes walking in

8. David brings home two lobsters instead of three, thinking it would just be him and the Young Man for dinner, and stops surprised in the doorway when he sees Lex is still alive, and blames it on eating bad clams, then quickly recovers

9. The boat just happens to die when they're on their way off

10. When Alexis asks Young Man if he's ever been in love, he says no, and looks right at David

11. Also, before going to play golf he begs Alexis to not forget the mushrooms

There's more, but that's all I got right now

it's been a while, but there's jsut so much to this movie that you can't right it all down. i adore it because it completely switches genres on subsequent viewings.
first it's a thriller/mystery, after it's a sweeping romance. but here are details that i remember..

12. after the boat crash and alexis and the young man are warming up by the fire, David calls out "Dear" or "Honey," both Alexis and The Young Man impulsively look up (thereby responding to being called "dear") before the TYM catches himself and looks down again.

13. TWM's agression towards Alexis after TWM gives her the carved heart and the boat "crashes." it can be inferred that David and TYM had a fight. i believe the "we did this together" speech happens shortly after. this is david's way of telling TYM not to lose faith, to keep trying.

14. TYM informing David discreetly that they've fixed the cut telephone wires. ("she held the wires together while i taped") thereby jeopardizing their plans. this causes David to panic and demand if anyone has called, and thereby spoken to Alexis.
(her suicide would be fishy if just that morning she had been all happy and planning future dates with
their friends)

15. David's all around yuckiness. he goes out of his way to make himself unappealing and gross, to drive her to TYM.

16. David's rejection of her at the cottage. in all those years of marriage, they never had children. perhaps they were never that intimate? makes sense if David is actually gay. he's seen to be very affectionate with TYM.

that's all i feel like bringing up now. seriously, there's just so much there.

Reedus/Fassbender/Hiddleston

I knew about the twist ending going in (kind of wish I didn't, would've liked to see this movie with fresh eyes), so I was looking for hints caught a lot of these as I watched. The lobster bit completely confused me though - I thought at first that David was feigning ill so YM and his wife could have dinner alone and further the seduction, but then he sprang up and ate with them anyway so it seemed very random to me. Your explanation seems dead on and totally clears it up though!

Ahh, I love this movie! Have to watch it a second time soon, I have a feeling that it's one of those that really gains meaning each time you watch it.

First off, who wouldn't throw their lives away to be with Norman Reedus? Dang!

Anyway, that explanation makes sense to me, too. The first time TYM kisses her, he actually brings the mushroom up to her face, so you can tell he was trying to get her to eat it then. Then, when David came back to the house and saw Alexis, he was shocked because the deed should have been done. As soon as she's out of the room, David sits right up and looks at TYM as if he's about to ask a question, and TYM says (as an excuse as to why the seduction didn't happen), "You've got a very loyal wife".

Then, in the next scene, when they're eating dinner, Alexis says she gave TYM the grand tour of the island. David asks TYM, "How did you like it?" TYM replies, "It's nice." David looks to the right and smiles seductively, biting the edge of his finger. If you pay attention, even though they're never shown in the same shot, TYM is sitting to David's right and Alexis to his left. We're supposed to think he's looking at Alexis like that, but it's actually at TYM.

I've got two good posts in me and I just wrote my third...

ooh, you're good! never really noticed these before...

I spotted another clue that something was going on between TYM and David: at some point towards the end of the movie, in the kitchen scene, David has some kind of rash or infection on the side of his mouth (when he tries to kiss Alexis good morning, she says no and tells him to look at himself in the mirror). And later in the movie, at the end, when TYM and Alexis are out in the forest and he rolls the mushroom on her face whilst kissing, you can see he has exactly the same thing (only a bit smaller) on the side of his mouth. So you can easily draw some conclusions from that.
