people failed to catch the little tid bits between rickman and the one who isnt named
lots of scenes betray the plot, if you watch it from the very beginning, it is practically given away, but still well played out.
Alan is in a semi-awesome shape, and the film is rather sad and realistic, in fact way too realistic to even be a thriller.
I agree. Not only does the beginning of the film foreshadow the later events, but there is a lot of symbolism woven throughout which points to the resolution. Plus, the director commentary does what few, if any, have managed: Howard explains every scene and nearly each shot within scenes of the entire movie. Every camera angle, every line of dialogue, every expression, every mood has a purpose.
When people critique films, many often point to plot shortcomings and not the atmosphere, narrative, mood, and pacing. This film deserves a higher mark for its intricate and subtle details. It may not be a classic or a masterpiece, but it rewards attentive viewers with all the small things.
Warning: anyone who buys this on DVD, beware of the bootlegs and make sure to get the Artisan release with the director's commentary. It makes a huge difference. There are greater, more successful, more appreciated films on DVD whose commentaries don't hold a candle to Adam Coleman Howard's commentary here.

I'll say this much; I think Rickman was just right for the part. I can't think of another actor who, imo, gives off such strong bisexual vibes.
