Minority viewpoint

Yes, it’s a cute movie, but it’s hard to shake the idea that Joe was being manipulative and a little creepy.

Isn't that just another version of every rich-guy (or nerdy guy) protagonist in these kinds of movies?

Stalking and manipulation are romanticised and made cute... Culminating in the creepy cliche of the 'grand gesture', which usually sounds alarm bells in real life...

Even 50 Shades of Grey has that concept, although that does have a dominance/sexual side to it that is somewhat based in reality...

I think One Fine Day (1996) avoids this dynamic by having a couple who is close in social status and who are more or less equals.

I think it is rare that movies can humanise the wealtheir man who pursues a woman without using creepy elements... The thing is, it's not as if wealthy men are inherently without charm...

Just saw it again. Yes, Joe was highly manipulative and it seems a bit (okay, more) creepy now. It "worked" back in the late 1990s. Of course, given the absolute key role of technology in the movie, it is hopeless outdated...yet still highly watchable.
