One of those rare movies that gets better each time you watch it.

I swear it gets better every time. I laugh harder at the jokes, I notice more details, and I appreciate every idiosyncrasy just that much more. There's not that many films you can say this about. This truly is one of those rare ones that falls into that category for me. Anyone else feel the same way about this one?

So many little lines actually get funnier each time I watch. "Look, I may not be rich, Mr. Blume, my father may only be a doctor, but we manage."

And the ending still gets me every time. Max's Vietnam play, the slo-mo as people hit the dance floor, the way Rosemary is looking at Max, "Ooh La La" by Faces comes on, then curtains...perfect!

- "So, who gave you the shiner?"
- "Either Ronny or Donny. Can't tell the difference anymore."

The way Bill Murray answers Max's question in the hospital elevator how he is: "Mmmh, I'm a little bit lonely these days..."

One scene which is very funny and sad at the same time is the way Herman Blume is throwing golf balls into the swimming pool at the twins' birthday party, going to the pool, jumping into it. The music in the scene is as always perfect.

Very funny: Herman Blume beating either Ronny or Donny in the car.

Every shot is perfect. This film is the definition/embodiment of a "perfect" film. There's only 8 or 9 other movies I'd dare to say that about and this one fits the bill. After I made this post I watched the movie another 38 times that month.

This movie definitely gets better with every viewing. I love it because it's one of those movies I pop in once a year, and it's funnier, and sweeter, and better than the last time I watched it.

Straightedge means I'm better than you.

I agree. Two others that seem to get better with each viewing, Ghost World and Fargo.

Yes, like Murnau's SUNRISE (1927), this is the rare kind of fim where you can find something new to admire each time you view it.

"Do you indulge in any form of worship?"

Not to mention its wonderful closing shot. It's a near masterpiece imo.

reply

No need to hold back. I'd use the word masterpiece with this film without blinking or giving an inch.

reply

I agree. It is the most perfect movie, in my opinion. I can watch it over and over.

I think Bill Murray climbing over the little fence, then falling flat on his side, is a great piece of slapstick

Just saw it again on the big screen last night. Every line, every song, every shot--big, small and almost imperceptible moments. The montage of Max's extracurriculars, the kite flying in the sky (and the close-up of Max's hands turning the handle just so when Dirk hands him the reins), the fire burning in the background at the cemetery.

Perfection indeed. Glad to see that others feel the same way.
