Was this Bill Murray's first serious role?

It seems like this was the turning point for his serious roles. Or were there some before this?

That's the correct answer, but I'd add to the OP that the 1984 "Razor's Edge" is a pretty weak, mediocre movie and Murray's performance in it isn't terribly interesting (even though it was a hugely personal project for him.)

Personally, I remember watching Wild Things & thinking that was his turning point. That role he had in WT seemed to offer more sophisticated chops for Bill.
