Most Underrated Funny Line in the Movie

I watched this movie in a film class and found one line particularly hysterical, but found no one else seemed to be laughing. At the play reception, Ms. Cross goes up to Luke Wilson's character and says "I didn't expect to see you here, did Max send you an invitation?" and he replies "Yeah, and he told me to wear a tie."

It gets me just thinking about it.

reply

Bill Murray's masterful deadpan with two cigarettes in his mouth "Mmmm...I'm a little bit lonely these days." Herman Blume is his best character ever.

That line you mentioned does crack me up though, Max being "nice".

reply

Pesonally I found the following line the funnniest:

"...So we both have dead people in our families...."

^_^

"You gonna' bark all day little doggy? Or are you gonna' bite?"

reply

Well, this isn't a line at all, but I laugh so hard every time after Bill Murray finishes talking to the teacher (I forgot her name), waits until she turns around, and then takes off!

reply

Yaah . That was really fnny . Also how he was hiding behind the tree nd peeping , before talking with her ..

the two cigarettes bit is my fav too. two ciggies is always good for a laugh.

reply

YESSSS! I Agree. One of the best lines.
Adios muchacho.

reply

All good stuff.

I like- "Yeah, I'll have one of those (carrots)." For some reason it cracks me up.

reply

"What happened to your nose?"
"I got punched in the face. What's his excuse?"

That line will never keep me from laughing.

I would say 'that's that', Mattress Man. ~Punch Drunk Love

reply

That's a hard line to catch unless you listen closely...but I agree it is brilliant.

reply

That's that.

NOW GET THE *beep* OUT OF MY STORE.

reply

"These are O.R. scrubs."
"O.R. they????"

hehehehhe...

reply

This IS such an underrated line

reply

Yes and Bill Murray's reaction is priceless.

Winner.

reply

I'll probably be made fun of

But I loved the scene where Bill Murray is in the car with his kids, and he asks if they invited Max to the party.... PULL YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR ASS

reply

I love when Bill Murray is at the outside art class and he asks the kid what he's painting. Nothing is funnier than the way the kid says "uhhh, that's a jellyfish"

reply

What's that? Oh, it's latin, isn't it?

reply

"These are OR scrubs!"
"Oh ARE they?"

How come no-one's mentioned this? I just cried with laughter at my desk thinking about it and I haven't seen Rushmore for over a year.

reply

"Your mind is as deformed as your ear." Hilarious.

"Don't act like that's a word everybody knows."

reply

Yes! That line was hilarious!

Everything I just said above is my signature.

reply

"He's not Scottish, he's Irish."

"Tell that stupid Mic he made my list of things to do today."

reply

actually, it goes like this:

"did you say my mom gave you a handjob?"
"who told you that goddamn lie? nevermind, i know who it was, and im gonna jam a knife in his heart, and im gonna send him back to ireland in a bodybag!"
"he's from scotland"
"well tell that stupid mick he made my list of things to do today! (then looking away to the sky) im gonna pop a cap in his ass"

classic

one of my favorite lines.

reply

I agree. That kid's tone of voice is hilarious.

reply

Hahah I love the jellyfish line!

At least you'll never be a vegetable - even artichokes have hearts!

reply

That was so great! and then bill murray reaches back and starts hitting him. Great scene!

reply

And then Herman Blume abruptly reaches to the back seat and strikes his kid.
That part just kills, for some reason.

reply

They way Bill's character reacts to that line always cracks me up.

reply

I mentioned this on another thread, but the line I thought was the funniest was when Max is in Dr. Guggenheim's office after exposing Ms. Cross and Mr. Blume's affair:

Dr. Guggenheim: I never took you for an informer, Max.
Max: What's that supposed to mean?
Dr. Guggenheim: [in a mocking tone] "What's that supposed to mean?"

I don't know why that made me laugh so much compared to all the other lines in the film. I guess because Dr. Guggenheim exudes dignity and prestige and it's really humorous how his disgust at Max prompts him to use a childish snark that is not at all consistent with his character. I also loved how he delivered the line, "He's one of the worst students we got..."

reply

Contractor: So, how are Ronny and Donny enjoying military school?
Blume: They love it.
Magnus: Lucky bastards.

That one doesn't get much love.

reply

Say, can you tell me where the pool is located? I might want to take a dip after I have dinner and hit the bar.

reply

"I saved Latin! What'd you ever do?"

reply

"One dead fingernail"

reply

That one's depressing! Well, here's one that has a tinge of sadness.

Desk clerk: And how long will you be staying with us?
Blume: Indefinitely. I'm being sued for divorce.
Desk clerk: Very good, sir.
Blume (to bell boy): Yo! Shorty!

reply

"is that Latin?"

reply

Bill Murray viciously blocking that poor kid's basketball shot...pure comedy gold :D...

reply

I think what got me going the most was the first groundbreaking ceremony for the aquarium.. I don't know about you all, but I assumed at first he somehow got permission to do this.. After Guggenheim came running out screaming at him I just died, realizing that he just decided to go and do it. I love Max.

reply

houstongriffin-1 I love all those Guggenheim quotes too.

I also love when he's in a coma, and he says "It's Fischer!"

reply

And I loved Max's response: "Dr. Guggenheim, I'd rather not have this conversation in front of my crew." Bravo, Max!

reply

Yeah, that part's hilarious. And perfectly nails down Bill Murray's character.

reply

He has no name but the character of Andrew Wilson I'm sure it is ... says after the play to Pagoda off the Royal Tenenbaums "what did you think of it"
he replies "best play ever made"

reply

"we went to harvard together."
"yeah? well, I wrote a hit play and directed it, so I'm not sweating it either."

reply

"i'm gonna pop a cap in his ass" (max talking about magnus) LOL i was rolling on the floor

reply

"Take dictation please"

reply

"She's my Rushmore."

I'll never forget that line.

reply

how about:

"Well somebody tell that mick he just made my list of things to do today."

reply

Harvard is my safety school

reply

this line isn't exactly underrated but it is funny.

Peter: I understand you're a neurosurgeon.
Max's dad: No, I'm a barber, but a lot of people make that mistake.

reply

Just the entire scene when Max first meets Peter

Peter: These are O.R scrubs
Max: Oh Are they?

And i can't remember what he was reaching for, but when Max hits his hand when he's reaching for a sauce or something and is practically yelling 'would you like me to pass you it?'

Actually, that line is kind of scary if you think about it.
