When Renoble shows Baldwin's character the Thoreau manuscript, he's playing with a table lighter, too. He makes the point that once he buys something, he can do with it what he wants. Does anyone think they filmed Renoble torching the manuscript to make his point, and then decided against it?

It does seem to vanish. And Renoble never smokes in any scene. Good catch. I wonder what it says in the book. I hope a reader stumbles across this thread someday.
