WHERE DID THE MAIN CHARACTERS COME FROM?

I've always wondered exactly what kind of place did these four come from? My guess is that they were born and bred in a futuristic, advanced town of some sort (you rememember the opening narration said that a handful of scientists remained). So I guess it must be an advanced town made up of scientists, who pass down their knowledge and skill from generation to generation ( when things got really bad in the 21st century, perhaps a large group of doctors, professors, biologists ect all went into hiding somewhere's). And Adam? My guess is the scientists have a zoo, found a way to give apes human intelligence.

That'd make some sense. Because it's almost like the Sith a year later when the first Star Wars came out that hid out for a thousand years before seeking revenge: what were these people doing in the meantime? They have riches (relatively speaking) with all this incredible technology (one has to assume it was fairly freely available up until the point where mankind started their downward spiral) whereas the rest of the human race is pretty much living in the dark ages. It seems like they (the scientists) should've banded together quite a while beforehand to start getting people back on the grid. Were they waiting for a certain time in order to do this? But then, this IS a childrens' show we're talking about, so it is bound to have big plot holes like that.
