The movie tries to live with the conceit that nobody knew who Denise was because she was a quietly sarcastic everywoman and wasn’t into high school BS (I suppose, like a real life version of Daria), and yet she was arguably the most naturally compelling person in the movie.

shareBecause in HS it’s all about cliques and being for HS stereotypes and not against them. She was perceived as a square loner for not toeing the company line. When you look at it through an adult lens she is compelling. To kids she is just a dork.
