Set for life - spolier kinda

When they are rehabing with the preacher, Bobbie and Mel get into an arguement over the next job with the safe. Mel claims this job will set them up for life.

When the job is later explained as an insurance job, 50K left in the safe, 100K will be claimed for insurance purposes. I have a hard time understanding how this will set them up for life. Even including a lack of all the facts this seems impossible.

They have a partner(s) "jewels" plus the jewler. Even if 50K is left in the safe, they will have to split this at some percentage with "Jewels"

Even if they also steal jewelry, which doesn't seem to be part of the deal, how are they going to be set for life?

Even if Jewels only takes a third, doubtful as he seems to be the power broker, they would get $33,500 to split between Mel and Bobbie or approximately 17K. Even in 1998 dollars, this does not seem like that much.

Is Mel just lying to Bobbie or is he delusional? Or am I missing something?

I was wondering the exact same thing for the last bit of the movie. Guess it just goes to show how dumb 'smart criminals' actually are.

The story is set in the 70s

Still wouldnt set you up for life. I could be wrong but I believe the rate of 70's dollars is about 7 to 1 for todays dollars so assuming my earlier analysis they would each get 17.5 in 70's dollars or $122,500 in todays dollars.

122K is a nice sum, but not anywhere near setting you up for life.
