What is WRONG with guys like him??

Richard Sutherland had EVERYTHING!! An near-perfect looking wife who loved him dearly, a good natured daughter who was also crazy about him, a beautiful house, a successful career, good looks, charisma!
And he blows it for what, control?! I know this is a movie, but this happens SO often in real life too!
What is wrong with men (and women) like that?!
Most people would give almost anything for a life like that!
