Simlarities to the Godfather

I just saw this film a few days ago (Pretty good BTW), anyhow, I don't know if it's just me but did anyone notice the similarities with the Godfather I and II?

A few elements which come to mind -

--- In "Elizabeth", The current ruler of England (Mary) dies, and the successor (Elizabeth) is portrayed as someone who is not experienced in the ways of the government, and is tossed into a posiiton where she must protect England from iminant war.

In the "Godfather", Vito Corleone dies, and his son, Micheal, is the only one of his children who is not experienced in the ways of the criminal underworld but yet ends up being the unlikely successor to rule the Corleone crime family.
He is then tossed into a position where he must protect the Family from war by the other 5 mafia families.

--- In "Elizabeth" there are several parties (and countries) who threaten war with England unless the Queen submits to a royal marriage proposal.

In the "Godfather", the five crime families threaten the Corleone crime family unless the Corleone family submits to a proposal of sharing the crooked politicians and cops on the their payroll.

--- In "Elizabeth" an assasination attempt is made on her life and she learns that one of her trusted servants may be responsible and working for the oposition.

In "The "Godfather, There is an attempt on Micheal's life and he learns that one of his closest family members is responsible and may be working for a rival gang.

- The ending of "Elzabeth" shows a montage scene of all the rivals being assasinated...

In all of the Godfather films, thending concludes with an "assasination" montage...Very similar to the one in Elizabeth.

Also, the transition being clear at the end (a la Godfather I). Good points.

A man is basically as faithful as his options

reply

No it's not just you!...I watched Elizabeth for the first time today and during the scene when all the conspirators against her are being executed, I had a deja vu moment and thought "I feel like I've seen this movie before.." then I remembered that I watched The Godfather yesterday. Ha! Good analysis...Elizabeth & Michael's transitions from beginning to end are very similar.

reply

Haha i thought I was the only one, I too noticed the similarities.

Well, you have someone unexperienced coming to power after experienced (President Ford after Nixon) - how original is that?

There are comments by Kapur on the DVD, he openly admits that some stuff
was copied from Godfather.

reply

I didn't notice these similarities because these are common themes when someone new comes to power.
inexperienced successor, new leader facing an imminent war, other groups threatening a country/family/person to gain power, assassination attempt where an employee is involved,

The closest Godfather-Elizabeth only similarity would be the montage. LOL

reply

I noticed them, too.

Great movie!

... This will be the high point of my day. It's all downhill from here.

Good call! I noticed the similarities with the assassination montages in both films. The one who is responsible for the killing is not seen near the action in neither film... but the scenes cut back and forth to each of them. In the Godfather, Michael is in church, and in this film, Elizabeth is praying... so they're both seen covering their deeds with religious acts.

Both of these are well-executed films.

^^I just noticed what I'd typed above & honestly... no pun intended!

How on earth did none of you recognize the exact same Mozart song playing after the executions? For shame.

reply

Exact same Mozart? Tgf is by Ennio Morricone, same composer of Purple Noon, an Italian.

now that you mention it, it's pretty clear

but i didn't catch up on it while viewing the movie

so many movies, so little time
