Really enjoyed this movie

Low budget, interesting plot with a couple of clever twists at the end.

Suprised by the lack of votes and comments about it.

Anyone else out there like and appreciate this movie?

Hi Sutcal, like you I enjoyed this movie - had me laughing a lot. I totally disagree with the one review that has been posted, and have submitted my own view point.

It is good to see a film about Ulster that isn't doom laden.

Would like to know what you think of what I have written, should be there in a couple of days.

I just saw this last night and although I am a bit of a fan of D. Thewlis, I have to say that I am ambivalent about this effort of his. It hurts to say this, but I think his acting was over the top hysterical at times and distracted me from the black humour, in fact, sometimes drained the humour out of scenes. He has very nice legs though, legs that any woman would envy. A bit strange that the makers felt it necessary/appropriate to wax them - but that's by the by.

I read the user comments, and have to agree with many who said the film inaccurately depicted many aspects of Northern Ireland. The plot also had a few other holes. For instance, I couldn't believe that Dan Starkey would have sold the last thing his lover gave him for 50p. Also, the fact that the police didn't figure in things at all was quite unbelievable, esp. re: the fact that he killed his lover's mother. Did no one ever find out? Why was it not mentioned by anyone at all after it happened? There is other stuff but the above is what first comes to mind.

If you can ignore these things, then you should enjoy the film. The dialogue is mostly well-written (except for Dan's ridiculous tirade toward the end with Brinn and Keegan - can't seem to stop criticising, maybe I got out the wrong side of bed this morning), the film is action-packed and the black humour is quite well done. Thewlis did the Nth Ireland accent pretty well, although I thought it was patchy in places, anyway it was better than some of the other non-Irish actors in the film.

i got this film not long ago with my ex. £6. oh my god. it was such a great film. we found it sooo funny. and her parents didnt aprove, lol. i think this film is great.

reply

Yes I agree. I think that Thewlis was the definite star of the show, hands down. He may have gone a wee bit over the top (well more over the top than the book character) but he carried this whole film. I cant think of anyone who can bring off the sarcasm and quick wit of Dan like Thewlis did.

Of course, we cant forget the great acting talents of Jason Isaacs and Robert Lindsay (a very peculiar to see him in after seeing him drone along the sometimes tedious "My Family".

If there are plot holes int he film, chances are its thank to the book. The film sticks EXTREMELY well to the film (there are a few things wrong though) and in the book, he does sell his tape (the only he had of any value on him at the time) so he can call his wife (I think he calls his wife anyway).

One of Thewlis' best (up there with Naked and Total Eclipse!0

I just bought this DVD recently and watched it for the forst time. And I have to say this is one of the funniest films I've seen in a long time. There were some classic lines in there and I love the general black humour theme.
Thought the whole cast was great. Perfect pitching and interaction.
I can't believe this film isn't more widely talked about and loved!
Btw, has inspired brand new tagline!

I confess.
I haven't read the book.
Although, to be fair, as soon as the film finished I found myself thinking "I must read that book!". They are always better, don't you think? I will track a copy down and digest it asap. I normally have a pile of books the size of a mountain to read, but I might just prioritise this one!

I do think David Thewlis is a good actor. And I really liked him in this. He didn't strike me as over playing it as you mentioned before, but then I don't have the book character to compare him with (yet). I just guessed that it was the whole persona of Starkey. He was under stress most of the time I suppose.
I did buy it mainly because Jason Isaacs was in it, and thought Keegan was a great character. But really, the whole film and cast were just brilliant.

Yeah..... the characetr was under stress but I just felt that in a few (very few) parts, he was a wee bit over the top but he was also wonderful and he was supported by a brill cast!

One of his best roles, bar none, along with "Naked" and "Total Eclipse"

Yes...I....will...get....the.....book!

Funnily enough, I called in the library in my lunch break today to see if they had a copy. Either they don't, or someone else is reading it!! I might have a scout over at ebay or Amazon and buy it there. As you say, have to get the book!

I think I read this ages ago, then came to the movie through a desire to seek out all Thewlis movies. OMG!!! It was fabulous!!!! I loved the political nature of it, and the way that Thewlis prtrayed the character. I am going to have to read it agin - and keep on seeing Thewlis movies too, of course!!!

reply

Rented it a few years ago and I really liked it. I only rented it 'cause Jason Isaacs was in it, haha, but it was good. Then I remembered it just recently, and bought the DVD. And I still love it. David Thewlis is brilliant!!

It's a nice little gem that definitely deserves more recognition. It's been quite a while since I saw it though. Maybe it's time for a rewatch...
