How much toast did the Wainthropps eat?

I noticed it seemed to be a side at every dinner they sat down to! Well, often enough, anyway.

It seems an unusual thing to serve at dinner to me, unless you are using it to wipe up gravy.

Some people settle down to simple things they really enjoy that is easy to fix and don't cost a lot. As Marie would say: let them eat toast. Now I'm hungry for toast.

They are flat broke. They didn't even have a car until later in the series. The Wainthropps are of retiring age and while they (especially Hetty, being ineligible for pension) do not want to retire, they are unable to retire so she finds work at a post office and later a private investigator. Robert later gets a job writing columns. And then they take in Geoffrey for a while.

I imagine the toast thing is an example of them being poor, just like how they have no car.

I myself am on that type of budget where I do not have the money or time to make anything that involves a lot of money and time.

Time is another thing to consider. Perhaps The Wainthropps were too busy to cook.

Or they could have eaten toast for comedic purposes. In the first few episodes, Robert was in charge of cooking but was shown to be a terrible cook.

I agree with you. I think it's entirely related to their budget and there is no deeper meaning than that. It's something we all get to eventually, but no one talks about it or addresses it directly out of politeness.

They're not 'broke'. And I don't remember them having it with every meal either, in fact, they don't.

Toast is a very English thing. I eat lots of toast. I'm not very poor. It's just an English thing, I think. We all love it!
