Wires on legs in the rooftop fight?!

Has anyone else noticed that in the final rooftop fight, when Jackie and the tall white kickboxer guy both start kicking each other's shins til they can take it now more, there is a wire clearly attached to each guy's kicking leg? You can see it in the full body shots. It seems to be pulling their legs back away from each other. Can anybody explain this?

reply

I never seen it, but if this is the case I assume it it because they don't want to be actually kicking eachother - because it would hurt obviously - and the wires are used to make their legs move naturally as if they're actually making contact.

I don't see wires and i highly doubt there legs are wired to do that. Timing for that was not too difficult. Yah it would hurt a lot, but they probably didn't use too much force, and besides JC's known to take pain for good shots in a movie.

The first few times I watched this fight I never noticed the wires, but I just happened to spot them last time I watched it. They're definitely there - I rewound a few times. The explanation of being used to pull the kicks just short of contact would make sense since kicking shin to shin repeatedly, even lightly would hurt and while Jackie maybe prepared to take knocks for his films, if there's no real need to I doubt he would and besides - maybe the other guy isn't prepared to hurt himself for a film.

It wouldn't hurt if they did it right. A friend and myself tried it one afternoon, and figured out a way to do it where you rotate your shin slightly so the impact is taken by muscle immediately next to the bone on the outboard side. And perhaps I have a lower quality version, but I've not seen any wires.

reply

Hmmm... whatever the reason, they are DEFINITELY there. They're not obvious and so I think they're not meant to be seen, but they ARE there.

Some of you may remember from the 'Jackie Chan: My Stunts' documentary where JC was visibly pissed at the poor guy because he kept screwing up the kicks. I'm betting that the strings are there because JC was afraid he might get his shin broken by one of the dude's powerful kicks.

Yeah - that would explain it too. So... can YOU see them? I seem to be alone in seeing them and I think maybe I'm cracking up!

Good news CapnDred, you're not crazy. I took a screenshot of the movie that shows the wire on Chan's leg. I couldn't see one on Smoorenburg's leg, but that's because his wire goes behind the leg he stands on while the one on Chan's leg crosses in front of his other leg so it's clearly visible against his black pants. Even though it's easier to see when the picture is moving, you can see it on this still too. http://img451.imageshack.us/img451/6463/whoamicd2.jpg

Ah! Thank you!!!My sanity is saved! I bet you just did that to shut me the hell up about these bloody wires, didn'tcha? Ha ha! Anyway- ta for that. I'm glad it's not just me! Sorry to have yarked on about them but I just wanted someone else to say they could at least see them. Dunno why. Feel a bit silly now... <ahem>

That's not a bad action-shot that, actually, is it?

reply

wow, I need to see it again to spot the wires.

It's a funny part in the fight though, they are both kicking away and jackie is grunting (one of his grunts even sound like "damn it!" if you listen closely).

"Timing for that was not too difficult. Yah it would hurt a lot,"

Why would it HURT at all? Jackie isn't a masochist.

Of course it wouldn't hurt, they were not really kicking each other. Have you EVER heard of 'shin protectors' or something similar? Please use your brain before posting. It doesn't take much to figure it out, negating the necessity of your post altogether.
