Does Sarah represent God or Satan (or neither)?

In other words, could she be representing or symbolizing the helpfullness and guidance of Goodness or perhaps the cunning trap of temptation and evil? Satan or Jesus/God?

Does anyone think it's one or the other or neither or something else entirely?

reply

I think neither. Sarah was the love of his life, and the movie shows how different their politics were and how she impacted him even after death.

If you read the book or listened to it on tape, Sarah is NOT dead. She's alive. She's just in hiding because of all the stuff she did in Chile. She's a missionary helping people escape dire conditions and oppression. The book goes into more detail. There is no way Fielding and Sarah could have ever made it. Their ideas were 360 degrees apart and although they loved each other, all they really had in common was their love/sex life. The book sure goes into detail on that!Pesonally, I liked the movie better. It was a softer, more poinant (spelling) look at them as a couple and the errie ambigious ending gave the story more feeling.

Just thought you might want to know that 360 degrees would put them back together, hehe. You probably meant 180 degrees.

reply

Neither. As far as Fielding is concerned, Sarah is the love which he had lost. His memories of her helped him to remember why he got into politics in the first place.

I'm not sure that she was one extreme or the other (God or Satan), but I think that she was something more than just the love of Fielding's life. I think she served a higher purpose, and she hinted at it early on in the movie when she said she believed in destiny.

Realistically, his political career wouldn't last very long if she was his wife. On the other hand, her death (and exit from his life) would leave him to be corrupted by politicians... and that would do no good either. However, by her dying and NOT leaving, it's a way to allow him to succeed politically while maintaining the values that she carried.

I beleive Sarah's role represents freedom and goodness in general. A representation of what humanity in the end is all about: love, care, help, etc. While fighting against the "evil" parts of society, such as: governments, politicians, money, etc. Her meaning of life was to help others, including Fielding, she helped him in the end, helped him to do what he was meant to and not be "a cog in their machine".

Satin. For sure. I lost someone who was on a completely different plane that I was politcally. I always felt support from him and he knew that even though we believed in different things it was ok. When got killed in a car crash I never felt him pulling me the other way when I got more politically involved I always felt his support. he knew if he objected I would never do it.
THis women in this movie is doing nothing but giving him a hard way to go she is very selfish, I think his family pickled up on that. If she loved him him she would of been supportive of his work even if she disagreed. It is not like he is commiting a crime. This was a bad hang up he had. Sometimes we love people who are not good for us. And she was not good for him. His confusion and not feeling well is not something a person who loves you would let happen if they could control it. I cannot see how this woman can be looked at as being anything but the devil. He was going nuts. Would a good person/spirit who let that happen?

no being dishonest to your love is evil... support has nothing to do with it. if your going to shut up j to make your partner happy then u are not in love. u are j lying to eachother about youselves, your ideas and your feelings. and as for the original question its fu(king stupid to believe that she represent pure evil or pure good. there's no such thing in humans and that was pretty much the point of the film. to ask that question just shows that you didn't understand sh!t about this great film.

I see her as more of a god-like character than satan. She's a temptation, but she herself says that she feels sorry for the people who get what they want. It reminds me of that twilight zone where the dead guy who gets everything he ever wanted is actually in Hell, not Heaven. I think she serves to remind him that getting what you want isn't what is important, but rather serving a greater purpose in helping your fellow man and fulfilling the role you were meant to play in doing that

reply

I don't connect it to either one, but she's more a source of good than bad in the film--clearly.

neither, she was the love of his life.
