Robert's role

I've seen a lot of comments everywhere about how Robert Mitchum shouldn't have been in this movie, how he may have been fooled into it, that he may have needed the money badly, and so on. I don't have any exact answers as to why he did it, but I consider the following;

Carrie Mitchum, who played Pier Angeli was married to Casper Van Dien at the time. Robert was her Grandfather. Could it be that he somehow reluctantly agreed (Robert always reluctantly agreed to act) to make a cameo appearance for his Granddaughter? Maybe Robert didn't have anything better to do, and worked on this movie for the "hell of it". Perhaps after being asked to star in this movie a few times, he realized that working with family might not have been that bad of an idea......? I could imagine Robert's answer; "Why not. What the hell. One for the road."

I honestly do not think Robert was fooled into anything. The movie was being filmed in 1996 I believe. Robert was pretty sick, but still quite lucid enough to know what he was getting himself in to. And he didn't need the money either. He had plenty.

Robert once commented on David Letterman that he was indeed going to watch the movie he had made with his son Chris, and his grandson (whom he referred to as "the Kid"). That's a rare thing to hear from Robert. He didn't like movies, especially his own..... It's possible that he would have watched this movie, had he lived long enough. Would he have liked it? Or would it have bored him like almost every other movie he saw? We'll never know.

Regardless of how terrible you may think this movie was, considering his age, illness, and how small his part was, his acting was spot on. I personally only watched this film for Robert, and it was the highlight for me.

Mitchum passwd away with over 10mill in the bank. The theory that he was fooled into doing this is an urban legand. He did it as a favour to his granddaughter and other family members who were involved in the tv movie.
