What's in this movie

I just have some questions.
Does the movie show how Dean would prepare for a scene?
Does the movie show Dean as a shy, sympathetic boy?
Does Dean get into a fight with director George Stevens?
Does the movie show Dean's popularity?
Does the movie show any scenes being filmed of Eden, Rebel, or Giant?
On a scale of 1-10 how is Casper Van Dien's acting in this movie?

If you are a fan of James Dean DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE!

It was a truly wasted opportunity and is THE single worst movie I have EVER seen in my life.

Wow, I am really late on adding my 2 cents, but let me start by saying, i am a major James Dean fan, but as far as Casper's acting in this movie, i have to give it a 10. I really think he captured James Dean. He portrayed him extremely well, but he resembled him a lot as well. I don't think they could have found a better actor to play the part. I absolutely loved the movie. It was everything i expected it to be, which was a lot. It didn't disappoint me at all. I can't say one bad thing about the movie in all honesty. It was truly perfection in my eyes.

Does any of us really know what James Dean was like or are we just hoping he wasn't a little crazy. He liked to live every moment as if it was his last and I think Van Dien portrayed that.

I think what a lot of people expected to see was that James Dean was very easy to work with and cool and everything else. When they didn't get that they were upset saying that his image was destroyed. From the quotes and biography i read on this site, it doesn't seem that off.

I also know there was flaws but come on this was a tv movie what did you expect? It was obviously low budget. It wasn't bad for the money they had to make it.

What's in this movie? Nothing at all you'd want to see if you call yourself a fan of cinema.

The worst thing, much worse than Casper Vain Thing's portrayal of James Dean, is that this was Robert Mitchum's last movie before he died of lung cancer the same year. It's immoral how they managed to fool the poor man who was obviously very sick already to appear in this piece of trash, just to be able to cash in on his great name. This is a TV movie? Not even worthy of TV, it's straight to video or an amateur home movie.

Imagine it! They managed to simultaneously violate the legacy of two Hollywood legends, Mitchum and Dean! They have no shame. That horrible grinding screeching sound ringing in your ears and setting your teeth on edge is not a teacher with long nail extensions dragging her hands down a schoolroom blackboard, it's the sound of the bottom of the barrel being well and truly scraped.

Hi, Mercury,

The movie shows a little of what is supposed to be James Dean preparing for "Rebel..." by meeting with some gang members. It does not look real. If anything similar happened in real life it would not have been as portrayed here.

Casper does a good job of acting, but he is not like James Dean. I am 68 and I remember James Dean's screen prescence when he was still alive. I saw East of Eden before James Dean's accident. The death of James Dean did not make big headline news when it happened. Two of his three films had not yet been released. It made about page 7 in Louisville's Courier Journal. I was certainly shocked. I was 17 and James Dean was my favorite actor after that one movie appearance I had watched. Casper did not have the nuances that were James' trademarks. Casper acted fine, but he was not close to James' persona. I give him a 5.

James Dean's popularity began to grow after his death when more people took note of him. This movie makes him look a little too famous.

Doing a James Dean movie is the same as being an Elvis impersonator. The minute you consciously try to appear to be Elvis or James Dean, you are no longer Elvis or James Dean. They were who they were. They were not TRYING to be themselves. They were themselves.

The biggest problem with this movie is it focuses on Pier Angeli and James Dean as if that was all that James Dean was about. That and the race car.

Being a fan of James Dean this movie was a huge let down for me.It should have skipped the love thing with Pier Angeli and got on with who James Dean really was.Van Dien tried to be James Dean as James Dean was in his movies,he was acting things out that we saw James Dean doing in his movies. To be honest this movie was like watching a kids school play, especially the part were they are arguing outside in the rain! And Dianne Ladd was awful as the Italian Mother, she was as Italian as sweet and sour! She must have put an a after every word she spoke and the only Italian she spoke was what everyone knows-Bonguerno,ciao and bella!!I'm sure they could have got a real Italian for the part.
Does the movie show how Dean would prepare for a scene?
- Nope

Does the movie show Dean as a shy, sympathetic boy?
- It shows him like he was a love sick teenager and a brat.

Does Dean get into a fight with director George Stevens?
- They argue but hug each other when parting.

Does the movie show Dean's popularity?
- Slightly.

Does the movie show any scenes being filmed of Eden, Rebel, or Giant?
- It doesn't actually show him doing any scenes, just being on the set.

On a scale of 1-10 how is Casper Van Dien's acting in this movie?
- I'd give him 1 for looking like Dean, but only when he has his sunglasses on and from a slight distance!

It has got Caspar Van Diem. It is never going to be good.

It's that man again!!

reply

In Diem's defense it isn't really his fault. He was miscast. I was more interested in Dean's experiences filming and rising popularity. Not his relationship with Pier. That part took up too much of the movie.

The version starring James Franco isn't perfect. But at least it doesn't focus on the Pier relationship. I haven't seen the 1970's TV movie or the more recent film about Dean so I can't give my 2 cents on them.
