1987 pennant

I loved the line when he said yes, his heart had been broken; "In 1987 when we lost the pennant." I was in Minneapolis then, and remember that afternoon at the elementary school where I was working, the special ed teacher was going up and down the halls shouting the score everytime it changed in that last game of the American League pennant race. Oh, the excitement! When the announcement came that the Twins had won, and would be in the World Series, we went nuts. My kids and I went to the Metrodome with 55 thousand other people to welcome the Twins triumphal return from Detroit several hours later. What a heady moment!

I thought Costner did a really good job in this film, although I didn't think the screenplay was as good as Bull Durham, where he also played a baseball player toward the end of his career.

LOL! I love that line in the movie. Perfect! Good way to shut her up, too.

The Blue Jays collapsed down the stretch in 1987, to be sure, but it wasn't quite that bad. They actually only blew a 3 1/2 game lead over the final 8 days of the season.

On Sunday morning, September 27, the Jays lead the Tigers by 3 1/2 games, on a 7-game winning streak. They finished the season by losing their last 7 games. The Tigers, meanwhile, went 6-2 that final week, including winning their last 4 games.

What made it so dramatic was that the Jays final 3 games of the season were played vs the Tigers in Detroit. Going into that last series, the Jays led the division by 1 game, and they proceeded to lose 3 straight 1-run games, including 1-0 on the final day when a win would've forced a 1-game playoff. Instead, the Tigers completed the sweep and won the division by 2 games.

The Blue Jays finished the season with the 2nd-best record in all of baseball. Unfortunately for them, the Tigers had the best record.

The WORST part of the whole 1987 season, was the Twinkies beating the Cardinals 4 games to 3. During that series, the home team won every game. Too bad St. Louis didn't have home field advantage! Lol
