Thirteen years later and I'm still laughing

You must be referring to the scene in which he sees Linda followed by Tracy spurring him on because the first part with only Jim and his wife was really a pain to watch.

reply

Yes, I agree. Ick and annoying. How could he even perform with her making those dumb comments throughout the act?!

"It's Minnie Pearl's murder weapon."

reply

So it's realistic.
That's the scene repeated in many 30-something bedrooms, especially when "trying to have a baby".

reply

Yup, been there.

reply

Seriously?

That scene scored very high on the CREEP-O-METER! Yuck!!!

Schrodinger's cat walks into a bar, or doesn't.

reply

it was sleazy, so it fitted well within the movie

so many movies, so little time

We need to understand his sex life with his wife, in order to understand his later motivations.

What can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence.

For as creepy and weird as it may be, its also very relevant to the character arch of Jim. Sure he and his wife are trying to have a baby, and are having frequent sex, which most people would consider a sign of a healthy relationship. But in actuality its become a chore. There's no passion involved, and even when he finishes he feels no pleasure. He's basically just doing his job. So if something he used to get great pleasure from can become a job, is it possible his job could start bringing him pleasure. Which is where Tracey enters, and the secret he knows about her, and the possibility that she might be starting to seduce him.
