Two reasons, I think.

I guess the writers felt that emphasizing the interracial aspect of the story would cause audiences to feel sympathy for the killer girl, and that isn't what they wanted.

More fundamentally, though, there had to have been some concern about vilifying the Korean-American community. Anglo-Americans are easy to turn into villains, because there are millions of them and they're confident enough not to take everything as an insult. But if the Catherine Suh story is any indication, Korean-Americans are a proud, prickly minority you don't want to p--- off. I remember that the last time in our history somebody p---ed off a Korean-American, he climbed to the roof of his convenience store and opened fire with a rifle.

I don't think either one of those is right. I think they just wanted to use white people, because they look better on screen.
