Does 'The number 23' ripp off from this movie?

I didn't see any of both movies yet. But from the plots it seems that the new Jim Carrey movie "The number 23" has been a lot inspired by this "23" movie!

I have seen 23. I have seen the trailer for "The Number 23".
Same setup, different plot.
While both movies share the paranoia that everything is connected to said number, "The Number 23" has nothing to do with the Illuminati, espionage or hackers.
In the Carrey movie, the protagonist's birthday, hour of birth, social security number and whatnot all ist connected to the 23 as well. He finds a book about somebody with lots of ties to the 23 and thinks that it describes his own life. The book ends with a murder. This is what drives him over the edge.

So while 23 might have been inspiration for "The Number 23", I wouldn't say that the latter one is ripping off "23".

I'd say it's near enough to have a case for the US studios ripping off films again. With all that money you'd think Hollywood could get some original plots for once without having to rehash other people's work all the time.

Exactly my thoughts....

What? There is hardly any similarity at all. This is about computer hackers and inspired by a real case. It's got nothing to do with the Jim Carrey film whatsoever. Seriously, it just has the same number in the title. That's it. Why even comment if you haven't seen it.

People talk such *beep* at times. There is a theory known as the '23 Enigma' which states that the number 23 can be flexed into just about any situation, both films feature obvious references to that theory, but the similarities end there - Titanic starts with scenes onboard a submarine so your logic would dictate that Titanic has ripped off Das Boot, am I right? With your feet on the air and your head on the ground, try this sig with spinach, yeah!

i have seen both movies and all i want to say now is that they differ a lot. even though i think "23" is the better movie, "the number 23" is definitely not ripping anything.

rofl no!, go back to your commercial crap boards

Don't even mention the Carrey abomination in the same breath as this great German film.

German filmmakers can hardly claim a monopoly on the concept of "23 paranoia." I believe the American writer William S. Burroughs was the first to popularize the obsession with the number. So, hurrah for America.

But, yes, Jim Carrey absolutely ruined this otherwise interesting film.

No, the Carrey movie doesn't rip this one off at all. The only thing they have in common is the protagonist's obsession with numerology. While the german "23" acknowledges the source of the 23 myth (Illuminatus!), the Carrey-movie seems to have picked the number at random. But other than numerology and the specific number, the two movies have almost nothing in common. And both are pretty good, though I'd say the german 23 is smarter, and slightly more interesting.

The Illuminatus! Trilogy isn't the original source of the 23 myth. Robert Anton Wilson credits William S. Burroughs with originating the idea in 1960, after a series of events related to the number occurred in a single day. It probably is much older than Burroughs, but he spoke of it 15 years before Wilson and Shea.

I highly doubt they did more research than read a wiki article on the 23 enigma and discordianism. It's unlikely that the people involved in the Carrey movie even knew about "23"

reply

Well, watch again, my friend. There are some good references to the Discordian/RAW universe in it. Of course, Carrey's 23 is not to be taken seriously, but a homage to the "paranoia" concept.
