For instance, he has explained that in the film world, you want everyone to like your movie, but in the art world it's considered bad if everyone likes your artwork. John Waters drew on his experiences in the art world for the "New York" part of the movie, and Pecker does feature many of Waters' interests, but it is not about his life in any way.
