Ok. it's not a masterpiece, but 4.5?. I give it a 6/10. The movie is watchable and deserves a better rating. There are a lot of worse movies than this. I think the low rating is because Van Damme is the protagonist, but his acting is better than other action heroes (arnold, stallone, vin diesel, etc.)
This was one of his best films. In Hell and Maximum Risk are good too.

This movie got a 4.5 because nobody was willing to give it a chance. I guarantee you that all those Van Damme haters (I've tangled with them on numerous occasions, vicious bastards) instantaneously gave this fantastic movie a low score, possibly without having even seen it. As a Van Damme fan I'll admit that he has made the odd stinker (Derailed, Cyborg), but this is most definitely not one of them. Even some of his better movies (Kickboxer, Universal Soldier) have all received rather paltry ratings, due to these same idiots. There's no justice.
Van Damme is mad he is my favourite actor and has been underated for most of his life just like Director Ringo Lam who has directed some great JCVD movies.
It started after kickboxer and bloodsport he changed directors and soon became quiet i have seen every JCVd movie there is (apart from the ones still in production of course)and i still avent come across one that i didnt enjoy. I agree with evildan2 theres alot of lovers of jean claude but there are also alot of haters of him too so they try to bring the score down with 1 ratings. Have you seen the movie IN HELL its a new one and its a good movie it has friendship scenes and JCVD go's crazy after fighting alot but soon becomes him good self again and it has a ggood story of the prison altough he has made a movie when he was in prison (Death Warrant) this was much better please find it and watch it u will enjoy TO ALL LOYALE JEAN CLAUDE VAN DAMME FANS LIVE WELL.

that's exactly how a I think about those imdb-ratings too. This movie should at least get a 6.5. It was van dammes best performance up until then (after this movie he made 2 better performances in hell & in wod.)

The movie should have higher raitngs, no doubt. Also Lioneart hould have higher than 5.1. Both could have 6/10. Maybe people are just giving bad ratings beacuse Van Damme plays. 4.5/10 is disaster movie, Legionnaire is not disaster movie, its ok movie.

And i'm a big fan of Van Damme.. he's not a Oliver Grunner or a Gary Daniels... this actor is really good and can do a tons of different roles... yeah he's the man with muscles and all but he can act and he's truly a good entertainer, I really enjoy Van damme work!!
I am not necessarily a fan of his, but this movie is one of my fave guilty pleasures. I just dug it to death and push it whenever I get a chance!

Its a decent movie...the acting isn't bad, and it does at least create some emotional scenes (shooting his mate in the head rather than let him be tortured to death was actually believable...more so than some of the action in his other movies). The other actors were likeable...and the betrayal...well, lets just say it was worked and resolved reasonable well.
I'd rate it as high as 7.

I'll have to admit, I don't like Van Damme at all, but I saw this movie yesterday and had to say to myself: "Hey, this movie is actually quite good compared to the rest of the Van Damme flicks I've seen.". So I went online to check out what rating it got on imdb...I was really surprised, since I think it deserved a 6.5. I think people are not rating objectively, they don't like VD and automatically gave the movie a bad mark.

shareThis is actually a very good film. The cinematography in this film is spectacularly beautiful (Douglas Milsome from Full Metal Jacket). It is also a very well acted film with a great cast, particularly Nicholas Farrell (Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet) and Steven Berkoff (Octopussy) who are Shakespearean actors. I think this often gets ignored because it doesn't stereotypically feature Van Damme sporting his kung-fu on the badguys (the mobsters are feared more than fought and the Riffs aren't truly villians) and that it actually features Van Damme's return to his early French dramatic stage performance days before his hobby took over. The low score is caused by a combination of 2 thing: those van damme haters who give it a 1 without even seeing it, AND those brainless van damme fans who give it a 10 and don't know that imdb has weighted averages instead of the arithmetic means

I've only seen two Jean-Claude Van Damme movies...this and THE EXPENDABLES II. Going on those two movies, Van Damme is a decent actor when given the chance and/or good direction, which he had in both movies. How he might do in a piece of crap script with a hack director is another story, but I'll take him over Steven Seagal any day. By the way, a 7 is about right for LEGIONNAIRE.
