DVD???

Is this movie available on DVD? If so where can I get it??

reply

It was released on Region 4 DVD in Australia in 2003. It would seem that you can get from HMV Australia. Costs about AUS$36 (£15) including shipping to UK. I've just ordered it!

reply

Cheers!

reply

The Australian DVD is OOP now.

The only other DVD I know of is the German release called 'Tough Boys' www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000069UST

No English language I believe.

reply

I'm in London and the middle of ordering it now on Region 4 from a New Zealand website. $38.65 NZ (About £15.50) including delivery to the UK which is quite reasonable.

That's the link for the info on the film but I think you have to register first to be able to purchase it.

Good luck!

reply

can region 4 dvd be watched on an irish dvd player?

reply

You mean Region 2?

It depends if the Australian disc is actually Region 4 or Region 0 or Region 4 + 2. Many are but many more are just Region 4.

You may need a multiregion player and sometimes your machine can be made multiregion easily by trying www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks

Good luck!

reply

anybody think there's a chance it's available in America? particularely in Los Angeles?

reply

It is on tonight on SHOWP if you want i can record it on my DVR and send you a copy on DVD.

When you walk a mile in someone else's shoes is it technically stealing?

reply

I actually emailed the Film Board of Ireland about this, just before Christmas. No news yet.
It's on VHS, though, and typically for a song (if you use EBay.)
Anybody comes up with a DVR-to-DVD burn, just tell me what you need for your trouble...>8)X

reply

I emailed the production company about this and they were nice enough to reply to me. They basically said they are always pushing to have have it released, but in the end the decision isn't up to them so for the forseeable future there are no plans to release it. Ridiculous!

reply

That's crap, I saw it on tv a while ago but I missed the beginning.

The R4 is region 2 encoded, as I bought it from EZY DVD in OZ a while back, gave it to my mate who has a R2 player and it played, the film isnt in widescreen and the quality is not the best. It was on BBC recently and it was in widescreen and the pic quality was far above the DVD. The DVD is very dark especially the start in the pub / club.

When this film was released, for some reason or other it was a longtime coming to video, I dont know if there is some distribution problems, but for a film which at one stage was the biggest irish film for some time, not to be released in Ireland, well it seems that there is a problem with the rights.

I also remember that the film had scenes in it which are not on the DVD.

reply

is there any chance it had a different name in Oz, had a look at the Ezy-dvd website and can't find it...
think it's time to start petitioning the production company

reply

It was released there with the same name - looks like they stopped selling it!

reply

You're thinking of When Brendan Met Trudy!

reply

who can we contact about releasing it? amazing that such a popular film in ireland (at the time) isn´t being released on dvd...

reply

Son of a bitch!

I just bought a DVD recorder, hoping to record some of my VHS tapes that I can't buy on DVD, including this one. This appears to be the only one that won't let me copy - some sort of coding protection BS. Anyone know how to override this?

reply

I am forever looking for a half decent dvd copy of this, it is one of the best movies ever, if anyone has and info about a r2 dvd version please let me know. [email protected]

reply

I googled and came up with Atlantic Video

reply

Yeh i got atlantic video aswell but they only haveit in region 0 do u know is that will work in an Irish region 2 dvd player?

reply

Is 0 for all DVD Players? Will check it out and see. According to several sites 0 is
"0 Informal term meaning "playable in all regions", "region free" or simply "all regions". There is no region 0 code as such; instead, all region code flags are set, making the disc playable worldwide"

reply

Yeah, 0 is region free.

That being said, I have Long Way Round, Region 0, and it plays in only one of my DVD players (in the US).

I've read that you can hack most DVD players to make them play any format - but haven't really looked into it yet.

reply

You can hack most of them but they can sometimes cause problems, not often but sometimes. And this movie is not for sale on atlantic anymore. Anyone know where else to get it?

reply

Yeah, I don't know why this isn't on DVD. I'll just have to wait, or find some way to burn it myself.

reply

Has anyone had any luck copying this to dvd? Or even found it somewhere on dvd?

reply

Haven't pursued it further. I'll just rely on the VHS, and hopefully they'll release it on DVD sometime.

Wasn't this popular in Ireland? Not in the US, that I know of. But you'd think that they'd put out a DVD in Ireland at least.

reply

Sadly, it wasn't that well received in Ireland. Not because we didn't consider it any good but simply because the Irish film industry is so bad at promoting it's own fare. Generally speaking, Irish movies are made for foreign consumption - you know, heartwarming tales of funny "Oirish" people overcoming the odds. Most of us Irish people are sick of them.

Well, I Went Down offered a partial-flavour of something different but the Irish film distributors and marketers didn't know what to do with it. It was almost straight to video. But, amongst us film fans in Ireland, the movie rates very highly indeed - up there with The Committments, Angel, Intermission, Once and Pavee Lackeen as Irish movies with something fresh to say. There's a few others too - Disco Pigs, Inside I'm Dancing (debatebly Irish), On the Edge etc - that are in the same vein, as in, trying to do something new, but they're just not that good.

I still love the big ones too of course though - In The Name of the Father, My Left Foot, The Field and so on... But Irish film needs a shot in the arm. Once and Pavee Lackeen offer the freshest direction.

"There's only one thing you can do with a girl like this... Make love once... Then die."

reply

Thanks for the information.

I only found out about this movie from an Irish poster within a thread for another movie. No one I've talked to had ever heard of it - and it's now 10 years old. Luckily, I was able to get a used tape of it.

I still can't understand why it's not more popular.

See what you can do about getting the DVD out.

reply

Yeah the Irish film market really needs a kick in the backside. I saw I went Down on ebay but VHS and since I no longer have a player I am stumped. I was checking several NZ sites as I know it got a release there several years back but none of them have it. A great shame that they don't release this. It is right up there with Once as the best Irish movie.

reply

Well, I have it on DVD. Got it on Ebay. It is floating around in the Far East. But, undoubtedly the Irish do (as our friend below accurately puts it) need a kick up the cinematic backside!

"There's only one thing you can do with a girl like this... Make love once... Then die."

reply

Would you be able to link a site where you got it? Also is it R2 or a different one? Thanks.

reply

I'm guessing, then, that it's not to be had as R1 version.

I'll have to search for the R2, and then look into hacking one of my players to play R2.

Thanks guys.

reply

Well I have been looking all morning and no joy as of yet. Will keep trying till I locate it; or it actually gets a release.

reply

I think you're right. I just had a look on Ebay and it doesn't seem to be there. I bought my copy, from the Far East, maybe 3 years ago. It will surface again at some stage I'm sure...

"There's only one thing you can do with a girl like this... Make love once... Then die."

reply

Like the Snapper, I got a dvd of that in Spain; never out in Ireland :(

reply

Let me know who to write to (about asking to release it on DVD) if you know.

Thanks.

reply

Well, if you look at the company credits on the IMDB, it seems there is a load of companies who had a hand in financing this film. This is probably why there is no proper release - maybe they can't agree to who owns the rights to what percentage of DVD sales etc.

But, take a look at the company credits listed anyway and maybe do one letter and send it to them all? Good luck. May the farce be with you...

"There's only one thing you can do with a girl like this... Make love once... Then die."

reply

I have it on VHS as I wasn't able to get it on DVD at the time (4 or 5 years ago). It has to be one of the best movies ever made by an Irish/British production company. The writing, directing, acting are simply top notch. How sad to see Peter Caffrey (Frank Grogan) pass away recently. R.I.P.

reply

You can now buy on DVD ;)

howya all
this is my first time posting on imdb, but for this particular film it is an honour. i occasionly look at this page and the abundance of people who are looking for a dvd release of i went down, and i am always amazed at the inaction of the companies behind the film especially rte here in ireland. well i'm sure this is hugely illegal but i have made a dvd copy of the film from the vhs copy and i'm not opposed to knocking up a few copies for those of you who would like a copy. it's not perfect, there's some slight static at the bottom of the screen when played on a dvd player but i noticed that it is almost perfect when i play it on my bluray player what with the upscaling and all. if any of you would like a copy just give me a bell and i'll do my best and if you are the copyright holder of this wonderful film then i will gladly cease and desist any copying of the film at a moment's notice. that's just me covering my own arse. i am irish and it does work in my region 2 dvd player so that's all i can vouch for. this may seem like a misplaced ebay ad but it's not i'm not looking for money i'm just happy that there are so many genuine fans of this classic.

reply

Hi are u still willing to make a copy of it? Id love to get my hands on it its bn so long since i seen it i can barely remem it, dut do remem i loved it.

reply

yep sure as mad as it may seem i keep a number of copies scattered around the house just in case i get a craving. contact me through my e-mail if you can and i'll fire it off to you. leave a message here if you can't.

reply

We've already have a 'torrent' of requests for this movie, and let's say if you know how to type the title of the movie and the above word into Google you shouldn't have too much trouble finding a copy.
