Location

It's been about 4 years since I've seen this movie, so forgive me for sounding like a complete moron...

Where is this movie based? I see that one of the locations it's filmed in is Goldfield, Nevada, but is that the actual town in the movie?

Thanks

The town in the movie is called Baxter, California, but it's fictional. I believe it was filmed in Goldfield and Tonopah, Nevada.

The filming locations are
Goldfield, Nevada, USA
Jawbone Canyon, Kern County, California, USA
New York City, New York, USA ,

but it's not exactly where... I have a hard time to understand how this movie can be filmed in New York City......

This movie was filmed mostly in Goldfield, Nevada. Though the fictional name Baxter was used. Goldfield is also nearly a ghost town that was booming during the gold rush. Since I have actually been to Goldfield I must say that if any of the filming was done in NY it must have been minimal and indoors since all of the scenery in the film is from either Goldfield or Jawbone Canyon.

I've been to Goldfield as well, that's why I asked the original question.

There's a few websites dedicated to Ghosttowns, and one of them told some about the history of the town. During the early 1900's, it was actually the biggest city in Nevada, with over 100,000 people. Once the mines dried up, people started moving away. Now, I don't even think there's 1,000 people in the County. When we would drive through there, and see the High School all boarded up, I never thought that at one time, this was a hoppin' little place to be.

Tonopah IS in Nevada; if its Arizona then it must be on Mars where you live.

I lived in Goldfield for 18 years when I was growing up. Tonopah is 26 miles from Goldfield has I had to ride a bus everyday for four years to go there for high school. I remember when this was filming and I met Christina Ricci. Sorry for the spelling I am in a hurry.

How could you stand living in that hellhole all those years?

There is another city, with a similar name. It's called Tonapah, AZ.

To this day in Goldfield, NV you can still see the set used for the Baxter, CA Sheriff's office.

Interesting... the town itself was pretty depressing looking, but the surrounding scenery was pretty cool and made me want to visit the desert!
