Julianne Moore was SUPERB!

OMG i just watched this again last night! I can't believe just how brilliant Julianne Moore was in this! She was amazing as the dotzy dim Cora Duvall.

I think this could possibly have been her best performance ever!!

reply

I wouldn't exactly call it her best, but she was really wonderful. She had the childlike thing nailed down.

reply

Julianne Moore was superb in this film, as were Glenn Close and Charles S. Dutton.

reply

I agree with you, ijonesiii. Close, Moore and Dutton all knocked it out of the park. I also enjoyed Rufus Thomas and Ruby Wilson down at the juke joint. Niecy Nash, Ned Beatty and Lyle Lovette were delightful too.

The tall guy lawyer looked kind of like James Cromwell, but I don't know his name. He was a hoot too. Especially when he came in to read the will with his robes still on.

Thanks. Looking over his filmography, I've probably been watching him my whole life.

No two persons ever watch the same movie.

reply

That line of his in The Thing is hilarious. You know the line I mean.

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

yeah, everytime I watch it I am a little awed by her performance. Her performance left me wondering if there was a book to better describe Cora's psychology. She was good in that little stage play and that smirk at the end, when the sister is behind bars, was right on the money for a character that is supposedly not all there. Yet, the way Julianne played it, these things did not seem out of place at all.

reply

I liked that little smirk...her sister kept her down and bossed her around her whole life, now she gets back at her. "like we KNOW it happened...I did good, didnt I?"

reply

Oh, no. I told them Aunt Jewel was murdered. Only crazy people commit suicide.

 Yes. The look on Close's face is perfect and Moore was perfect with.

I did good, didn't I?

I think most people forget that Cammile had slept with Cora's husband, had his child and nearly died only to have her life saved by her sisters blood donation. Then she spends the rest of her life bossing her around and treating her like a child.

The scene with the phone ringing and the front door wide open while Cora sits thinking is very telling. Also, she *never* saw the note. She may know the truth, but the note stands on Cammiles word alone. That isn't worth much by the end of the movie, or beggining.

what is most amazing about her work in this film is that it is one of four great performances she gave in 1999 releases. the others were sara in 'the end of the affair', laura cheveley in 'an ideal husband' and 'a map of the human heart'. oops--i forgot linda in 'magnolia'.

moore is incredibly versatile and stylish and a bit of a daredevil in her choice of roles--america's cate blanchett. i hope she stays with us for a long time.

reply

She wasn't in Map of the Human Heart.

I'm watching the movie right now, and Julianne is just spectacular.

First time I saw it, I didn't realize that the actress was Julianne until about 3/4s of the way through.

A really tremendous performance, and she plays it so subtly, the greatness od it almost goes unnoticed.

This is a performance that is at least equal to Hoffman in 'Rainman', but it is hardly recognized.

Moore was wonderful!
