I can't believe the number of people on this site that rated this steaming pile of crap a perfect 10. There must be some people that don't care if a movie is good as long as the movie has a plot that revolves around homosexuality

Agreed! A friend and I found this in her parent's case of videos so we watched it. I couldn't believe was a stupid movie this was. Not funny, not engaging, not interesting. Just stupid.

haven't watched »chutney popcorn« yet but anyway i'd recommend »hu die«/»butterfly« by yan yan mak, »sancharram«/»the journey«, »fingersmith and »tipping the velvet«, »clara cet été là«/«clara's summer« and »my summer of love«.

i'm looking forward to watch »nina's heavenly dilights«.

Chutney Popcorn is a wonderful movie, I can't see why anyone would find it to be dreadful when it is so full of little twists and complications in what it means to be a mother.

This movie did everything to advertise itself as a low budget film. I felt like the film makers kept trying to communicate the message "Hey, look at how avante-garde this film is!" From the "alternative coffee house music" style of 15 years before (a staple of "original" films), to the odd angled shots that are "so uh-Hollywood", to the youTube quality finishing, this movie's creators tried their darnedest to make sure nobody confused them with "mainstream" film makers.

I think the reason it was cheesy rather than stylistic is because of several reasons. First, no film made in the last ten years has a good reason to have shoddy technical work, because it's not an original idea to have retro post production quality, and it isn't particularly expensive to find a good crew (Tarantino and Jarmush beat you all to the punch, get a new idea already). Second, the idea of having useless banter is old hat as well and was poorly done. Last of all, every film hinges on the quality of script and acting. There were a few standouts that did well (I thought that Cara Buono, who usually plays airheads, was surprisingly engaging), but mostly the cast didn't carry it.

The saddest part of it is that the plot is actually twisted and darkly humorous in concept. The screenplay isn't actually all that bad either. With better production, it might have been a good black comedy or something. What it ended up being was, well, something else. I'm sure people ate it up at Cannes or something, but its lack of real success is deserving.

I think the movie is the way it is for a few reasons. First, it's not supposed to have any depth, it's just a popcorn flick, hence the title, so if you were looking for depth and meaning and something really interesting, this was probably the wrong place to look.

Second, Nisha Ganatra, who plays Reena, was not supposed to star in the film -- she is the director. At the last minute, the actress slated to star got another offer and abandoned the project, leaving Nisha and company in the lurch. Nisha stepped in a filled in the gap. Needless to say, directing and starring in the same film, especially when this wasn't planned, was difficult.
