MOVIE REFERENCES... CATCH ANY?

Hey guys, not sure if this has been a topic before... i'm a huge fan of this show even 13 years after it came out.
Now that i'm older, I recognize some movie references in this show... ws wondering if you guys caught any???

Here's mine:

1. The episode of SAL 3000 (the one where the red computer thing controls their school) is, without a doubt, based off of 2001: A Space Odyssey, where the computer HAL takes over the space station. I thought it was kind of funny once I saw this episode, because that movie was made in 1968... what kid would catch that reference at all?!

2. The episode where Hank the janitor is discovered to be a math genius is also, without a doubt, based off of 1997's Good Will Hunting, where Matt Damon's character is a closet math genius janitor who solves math problems on the chalkboard.

Any other movie references come out of Recess for you guys? I was just wondering if there were any I haven't caught. Thanks ! :)

I think on the episode "The Voice" where Mikey and that woman music teacher (forget her name) are singing/playing the piano, somehow the music is played through the school's PA system and you see all the student's stop playing and listen to the music.

That has to be a reference to The Shawshank Redemption where Andy plays the record to the rest of the prisoners.

Thats the only one i can remember off the top of my head :)

The episode where it's really hot outside contains a reference to Lawrence of Arabia, if I remember correctly.

-"Morello, do you wish to see... a miracle?"

Mikey says something like "I fashioned a burnoose in the manner of Sir T.E. Lawrence." Of course Lawrence was never knighted...

"Haven't they replaced you with a coin-operated machine yet?"

reply

In the first few episodes, i think a couple times Mikey, in reference to the swinger girl's attempts to swing completely around the swingset, says "to boldly go where no kid has gone before". I never got that when i was a kid but now its just hilarious. Obviously a reference to Star Trek.

There was one, I think it was King Gus, when a girl's doll carriage was shoved in the way of something, which was a reference the Untouchables which took that scene from another movie.

What I want to know is is there any war movie reference to the picture day episode?

reply

i was wondering that too! i bet there is... like the part where randall is playing the harmonica and stuff. i bet there is a reference but i havent seen enough war movies to know.

Yeah its from the silent film Battle Ship Potemkin during the 'Odessa's Steps' scene. During the scene a woman's baby (in a carriage) gets pushed toward the end of the steps with war and carnage going on in the backgroud. I got that instantly because I had to watch the film for a class. It made me laugh how similar the scenes were. This just reminds me even more how awesome Recess is. First of all, he wasn't gutted; I made that part up... his throat was slashed.

The Ashleys are a reference to the title character's of the 80s movie Heathers.

In the episode where they are looking for the Third Street Treasure in the Ashleys' club house, they dump out dirt all over the playground from their pants and lunch boxes just like in The Great Escape with Steve McQueen.

Also, in the field trip episode, Miss. Finnster says "I love the smell of diesel in the morning" which is of course a reference to Apocalypse Now starring Martin Sheen

reply

Wasnt that episode based of the episode of the X-Files where Mulder and Scully go to the business building and the computer/security system tries to kill everyone?

"Nobody is free, even the birds are chained to the sky" - Bob Dylan

The episode where they broke the statue and were in the worst trouble ever was a reference to cool hand Luke. Remember finnster's glasses?

I recall The Box explicitly referenced that movie.

"Haven't they replaced you with a coin-operated machine yet?"

reply

You mean aside from the references to The Great Escape?

reply

Well not a movie reference but how about a tv show reference? They referred to Hogans Heros when T.J. was talking to the comic book artist in the nursing home.

reply

Television show references to "McHale's Navy" and "Hogan's Heroes" with hints to other TV-references like "Combat!", "The Rat Patrol",and "Gilligan's Island"

There were a lot, the "Omega Kids" were a reference to the "Omega Man" movie based on "I Am Legend." Doesn't the dodge ball episode end with Gus walking off into the distance and the kindergarten kid says "he lives on now only in my memories" like at the end of "Mad Max 2/The Road Warrior"?
