Why couldn't Fiona stay a human and Shrek stay an Ogre?

Just... why not? She could be herself and he himself and be together without either of them having to change. An ogre and a human could be together; they're not so anatomically different.

It was because the curse that turned her into an ogre goes like this: "By night one way, by day another, this shall be the norm. Till you receive true love's kiss, then take love's true form." So when she fell in love with Shrek and kissed him, she became an ogre permanently. That would've happened whether or not she was under an ogre curse, because her true love was an ogre; if say, her true love was a human, she would've become human, which is what she assumed would happen. But because she was cursed to become an ogre by night, it was just all the more ironic that she ended up becoming one permanently.

As far as being anatomically compatible, I don't think Fiona as a human could have survived very long with a male ogre who was like 4 or 5 times her size. ;) LOL

Thanks - I like your reply. It makes a lot of sense!

No problem :)

You *really* think that would have worked? It would be, eh... uncomfortable, to say the least. Plus, even as an she-ogre, Shrek's head is still about 100 times bigger than hers. He's go in to kiss human Fiona and end up accidentally biting her head off.

I admit, for about a second I wished she had stayed human and they'd be one happy human-ogre couple, then when the full implications of that sunk in, I changed my tune quite quickly.

it makes better sense than your retarded opening thread.

They wanted fat, dumpy green girls to feel good about themselves I suppose?

reply

Its because like people need to stay together. (I hate to sound racist but I do notice this) It's like on TV when African-Americans are almost always with someone who is also African, you hardly ever see couples of mixed race.

reply

i prefer the 'true love's form' argument. gradually, gradually tv's fear of our fear of 'miscegenation' is fading, and i think that's to be encouraged.

I'm a cult, I'm a cult, but my ma won't admit it...

Or maybe Shrek is around to make fat dumpy guys feel better about their pudgy asses? I for one am glad this movie had the balls to have the female end up not so hot. That never bloody happens. Men can be ugly and likable; women have to be anatomically impossible princesses.

I just think the context is weird. Shrek himself is already a green monster, so him falling for one isn't that inspiring. Shallow Hal had the same problem with Jack Black learning to love for what's underneath, never mind that he's Jack Black. If these movies really had balls they would have some stud guy fall for them, but they don't, so message just seems like "ugly people belong together".

This is what I hate about this movie. A cross-species romance is JUST NOT ACCEPTABLE!

Practical matters like ogre size v. human size are totally irrelevant--this is an animated fantasy. And somehow Donkey manages to have romance with Dragon.

But nooooo, a human couldn't love an ogre--that would be wrong.

The writers were sloppy and pandering to a perceived notion of what's right.

Grrrr.

reply

Yeah, I had the same kind of thoughts. Like they completely missed the point of their own message and managed to contradict it.

Welcome to stupid America.

reply

Not so much stupid America as stupid people, it seems.

The reason she stayed an ogre was because it was love's true form. She was an ogre that just turned into a princess during the day.
She loved Shrek, and that's why she became an ogre.

Had she married prince Charming, as it was decided, she would probably turn into a human permanently. That's why her parents wanted her to marry Prince Charming, so that she could ignore her ogre self.

reply

You do realize that that is the way the writers wrote it--and thus is the whole point of this thread?

reply

Donkey and the female dragon had a cross-species romance in the movie. I fail to see how this movie is against mixed romances.

reply

Because Jeffrey Katzenberg and the other people at Dreamworks Animation SKG wanted to do a fairy-tale twist on it because they wanted audiences to believe that when Shrek kissed Fiona she was gonna stay a human and Shrek was gonna turn into a Prince Charming because that's how it would happen in original fairy-tales so they had Fiona stay a female ogre because Shrek found her to be beautiful as a female ogre. Now ya get it?

reply

There's been lots of sensible replies and thoughtful opinions and I appreciate everyone who has answered this, even if it was a subjective question.

My idea on "true love's true form" now is that it's whatever form Fiona wanted to be, and she liked being an ogre most.

the movie reminded me a little of the old film called The Enchanted Cottage... google it to see what i mean..

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, she was beautiful to him and in the end that is all that matters..
would it have been better if Shrek had turned human to those who dont like the ending?

reply

I got the impression that love's true form was implied to be human, so that the ogre cure would vanish.

But since Fiona really did love Shrek, she stayed ogre for life. If she had married Farquaad or someone else she would have change at all.
Quite ironic if you think about it:)

So it's not so much that she didn't want to be ogre, she didn't have a choice.

reply

she did in the sequel and she chose for them to both stay as Ogres.

reply

Still she was different to the fairy-tale princesses, she wasn't a damsel.
She wasn't even really asleep when she was in the tower.
Fairy-tale princesses would never kiss Shrek.
Usually fairy-tale dragons would kill anything and would be slayed. But the Dragon in Shrek loved the Donkey.
