If you have seen other Rollin movies you would know he used a clown character in a few other films. I don't have an explanation but Rollin had some obsession with clowns (always female).
Not just clown but also various creepy/weird characters. Probably they represent the madness of the living as opposed to the calmness of the dead (who are 'friends' of the couple).
