I LOVED this movie because...

1) It wasn't comprised of straight-up, mindless one-liners from start to finish. The scenes involving Dunphy's mother almost brought a tear to my eye.

2) The filmmakers didn't resort to making Amy Smart parade around in tight tops and short skirts in order to convey her beauty.

3) The soundtrack. Enough said.

4) The casting was excellent. Alec Baldwin did an awesome job as Dunphy's dad.

5) I really dug the contrast between Dunphy's character at the movie's opening to towards the end after Jane's acceptance to Brown had been revoked. Shawn Hatosy really impressed me with this one.

Why hasn't this movie been given the recognition it deserves?

I totally agree with you on the Soundtrack it was awesome. So much that I had to get it on cd when it came out.

One more thing u forgot. The scenery. I loved the normal like place that OP took place in. Seemed real like you could almost be there. I can really relate with the movie.
Its true though this movie never got half of the credit it deserved. I think a lot bc it wasnt one of those fancy schmancy high cost films like the Matrix or anything. I still think this is the best movie ever if you like real life actors and things you can relate to if you come from a small town. I also loved Johnathan Brandis small role in the movie.........RIP JB

I too enjoyed this movie for all the reasons you stated...plus I was a teen during the time this movie took place, in the same New England setting, and Tim Dunphy is like every boy I had a crush on...and gotta mention the classic advice Old Man Dunphy gives to Tim: "Making sex is like a Chinese dinner: It ain't over 'til you both get your cookies."

I was also impressed with the acting of Alec Baldwin and especially Shawn Hatosy. He was brilliant in an ER episode where he plays a patient with multiple personality disorder. He seemed to physically change during scenes, it was just mesmerizing and heartbreaking. I will definitely check out some of his other work.

Future events such as these will affect you....in the future!

Dunphy: "Prep School? What's prep school for?"

Dad: "It's to prepare you for me beating your head in!" (or something like that)

I've just stumbled upon the movie again while channel surfing, and I'm watching as I type this. I'm struck by what a GREAT cast this is...This is where I first discover Shawn Hatosy and Tommy Bone as the Dunphy bros. were great, and Alec Baldwin was inspired, and Jon Abrahams was endearing as “Drugs Delany”. I have to go watch—he’s just arrived at school...

I too love this movie. Sountrack was great, characters are great, story was great. And I can relate to the kid in the wheelchair since my sister's in one.

Probably the best soundtrack EVER for a movie. Can you imagine if this movie and others like it with great music were in the same boat with some DVD releases of TV shows that change the original music?! Think about it. Imagine Forest Gump without Free Bird playing when Jenny attempts suicide. Imagine Almost Famous without probably the entire scene of the band singing Tiny Dancer on the bus. The rules of music rights apply differently to movies than they do to TV shows. And when the films are released on DVD, the original music is still there. This does not apply to TV shows released on DVD. It should, but it doesn't. It's bad enough when WKRP is released on DVD in such a tedious form with NO original music in sight or sound, but imagine if films like this one were in the same boat.
