Release year: 1975 or 1972?

Amazon has this as released in 1972, I think like imdb that they are wrong and it was 75. Can anyone confirm?

reply

I have just bought the DVD and it has bonus features including interviews with the 3 main people involved with this film.

As the Producer and Director David Elfick is talking about how they got to use "Echoes" on the last 23 minutes of the film, David says: "Pink Floyd were number 1 across the world with an Album at the time..."

That Album is "Meddle" released in the Autumn of 71 and therefore was number 1 in 1972. So the "Crystal Voyager" was made in 1972.

The inner sleeve notes with the said DVD also confirms the year as 1972.

The DVD is released by "Blue Dolphin" here in the UK.

I hope this helps with this topic.

Very best regards.

Ps I hope the Editor of the orignal article can now amend the year in question.

Hi quentinnuk , hi radiopresenter,

I am the editor of the original article and I tend to confirm the year 1972, based on the "rororo Filmlexikon" and some old web links about Pink Floyd.

I don't know why imdb changed the year to 1975.

It might be interesting for you to learn the history of this imdb article:

I think it was summer or autumn 1997 when I found out that there still was no imdb article about my favorite movie Crystal Voyager, so I decided to write it myself using the data of the video copy I had bought. The most difficult part for me was the quote, I'm still not sure if I understood every word right which was mumbled by George during the intro of his movie :-)

Unfortunately neither on the label nor in the credits the release year was mentioned. Since any article in imdb needs the release year as a key and I couldn't quickly find out that year, I decided to make at first a best estimate and to correct it later, so I guessed 1978 to get the article started ---
:-/ --- sorry for that.

After I found out the real year by asking German television on 24th March 1998 (who had broadcast this movie e.g. on 21.8.1979 [Bayerisches Fernsehen] and on 10.6.1981 [Suedwest 3]) I tried to submit a correction but meanwhile imdb had introduced the registration process. After I had been registered I submitted the correction to release year 1972 which was accepted by imdb on 12 Jun 1998 18:55:27 GMT .

Maybe imdb later mistrusted this drastic correction by 6 years and made some own research or they didn't believe that I was the original editor because in 1997 no registration was needed or they received a correction by someone else, I simply don't know what triggered the change to 1975.

I will try to make a correction again, let's see if it is accepted...

I think that the release year is the most delicate data to correct because it might be used as a key column in the underlying database, so there could occur several problems with referential integrity...

Best regards

I just watched that interview. It was not "Meddle" that was #1 when the producer David Elfick and George were discussing using Pink Floyd music. It was, rather, "The Dark Side of the Moon" that was the #1 album when they were filming Crystal Voyager, and discussing using the music. The producer explains that they were more interested in using "Echoes" from "an earlier-released album 'Meddle'". Sure, Meddle was released in 1971, but it was during the Dark Side of the Moon era when they were filming Crystal Voyager. Therefore, I would lean more toward it being 1975 when it was released. They must have filmed ca. 1973, and may have taken the next couple of years or so before they had a film screening (which is what qualifies as the date of release under IMDB rules).

Incidentaly, they negotiated royalty-copyright payments for use of the song, getting the price low (since this was a low-budget picture) by, in exchange, allowing the band (Pink Floyd) to use any part of Crystal Voyager they liked for use in their backdrop films. If you ever saw a Pink Floyd concert, you may have caught parts of Crystal Voyager in their backdrop films shown on "Mr. Screen", the big round film screen behind the band.

This is definitely pre-1975 because I saw it theatrically in the UK in 1974.

Pink Floyd was showing clips from Crystal Voyager on their screen during their 75' tour. If it were released in 1975, I don't think PF would have been able to have access to the film. Film company would not allow a band to use a "new release" for their own needs. I lean toward it being released in 1972. Pink Floyd was touring DSOTM{in various stages} most of 72' so maybe the guy in the interview was confused about the album's release

I saw it at the Sydney Opera House movie theatre in December 1972 or was it 1973? Either way it was NOT 1975.
