Sofia was the love of César's life because

a) He hadn't had the opportunity to have sex with her yet.
b) Pelayo's interest in her made her more appealing.

César never got the opportunity to screw her over like he did Nuria which is how he probably treated all of his other past conquests. The accident interfered with his usual games and since he relied solely on being beautiful he was unable to properly pursue her which automatically turned Sofia into his what if and the possible love of his life. He seemed fixated, not in love.

I agree that that had a lot to do with it.

You're wrong. He simply fell for Sofia in a way he never had with anyone else. This is made clear in the film, and happens to many "players."

He never "screwed" Nuria over -- I doubt he ever promised her anything.

He was stupid in getting in the car with Nuria. The queered the relationship with Sofia as much as his face did. He knew that, and that's why he was in so much pain, leading to everything else.

Please, he only met her twice and the second time was disastrous, ofcourse he never really loved her. I don't think you understand the message of the movie, he loved a girl who didn't exist. The ending makes that pretty clear.

reply

Because she was played by Penelope Cruz.

Heck, I'm a straight woman, and I fell in love with Penelope Cruz. She wasn't just beautiful, she had a personality to go with it. I suspect not too many men, players or not, would have gotten bored with her very fast.

Yep. Love stories usually have a way of confusing lust for love. Just replace the hotties with notties and see how it changes everything.

I think you are right. I got the impression he got fixated on every girl he wanted to sleep with, until he actually got to sleep with her and then he'd dump her. What makes Sofia even more interesting to him is that she turned him down, once the first time they met, and twice after the incident at the club. After that he turns her into some ideal woman who will love him despite his looks, because she was basically the one that got away.
