as good as the book?

my friend loves the book, but only the philosophical parts. So since i'm thinking of giving it to her as a present, I'm wondering if the movie at all catches those parts? or if it focuses more on Sophie's life?

(SPOILERS AHEAD.)

The latter.
The philosophy is in there, somewhat (although not so much in the 113min version.. the 3h version does have more of it), but in a very different manner. The philosophers are all covered in a way similar to that of the Ancient Athens video in which Alberto introduces Socrates and Plato -- suffice to say that Sofie and Alberto are almost literally *there* in the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Romanticism, etc. That makes the film somewhat more fantastic than the book was, and there is also, from early on, great focus on the fact that Sofie and Alberto are fictional characters.

Hope that helped ;)
