How on earth did they manage to make this into a film?

From what I've read of the book, most of it consists of lessons in philosophy as if in lecture form. Did they go back in time and have people acting out the part of the Greek god's and philosophers and what have you as Sophie was reading the letters or something? I can't imagine how they would go about adapting this novel.
