It wandered into the road.

The deer is a fawn, which symbolizes new life. It appears after the death of his mother and the death of Simon. It reminds Joe that life goes on after the heartache of death. It is especially poignant that a deer causes the accident because it shows that this life goes in a circle and also that death is natural. Does that help?

It does.

I would say the bus driver rather then deer caused the accident. The driver had no business veering off the road.
